Miami Palmetto Senior High School junior Gabriella Alvarez loves to write.
“I would love to write a book one day,” she said.
In college she plans to pursue journalism, communications and maybe study politics. Her interests in these fields began at Ammons Middle School, where she created The Scribble Society. Now she goes every other Wednesday to lead their meetings.
“I’ve been doing this throughout junior year, and I created the club in sixth grade,” she said. “Right now, it’s just a creative writing club and I’m going to help the students create a literary magazine.”
She hopes to get the magazine finalized by the end of the school year. Entries will be a mix of poems and short stories, and submissions will be open to the entire school.
“We are also going to work with the art club to get some student produced art for the literary magazine,” she said.
In addition to teaching the middle school students creative writing, she’s also teaching them journalism. Alvarez is on The Panther, Palmetto’s student newspaper, writing for every section while also serving on the leadership team as Business Manager.
As Business Manager, she oversees the paper’s fundraisers and promotes the publication.
Additionally, Alvarez is involved in clubs like Spanish National Honor Society, National Honor Society, Interact Club, and is Historian of the English Honor Society.
“In EHS, we work in conjunction with the creative writing club to put out our school’s literary magazine (The Golden Sun),” she said.
Aside from this, Alvarez is also a member of the Palmetto cheerleading team and is Marketing Co-Chair for Student Council.
“I’ve been on the Panther cheerleading team since freshman year,” she said. “I love spreading school spirit.”
Her desire to connect with others and keep them informed has made her passionate about her work on the Student Council.
“I help make posts for the school Instagram and keep everyone updated on school events,” she said. “Most of our posts are reflective of school events like pep rallies and club meetings.”
Alvarez is not only active at school but around the community. She’s a member of the Palmetto Bay Youth Community Involvement Task Force – a group of kids from the community that work to make the community a better place.
“I’m working on a project about the Atala Butterfly,” she said. “It’s native to this region and is the Village’s butterfly,” she said.
She also worked on the My Buddy Bench project.
“We designed and painted two benches in Palmetto Bay and Coral Reef Park,” she said.
“The idea is that kids can sit down there and talk to someone new. I love the task force, and we do great work.”
Her commitment to the community and passion for writing has led her to do an internship at Time Out Miami, a blog that details things to do in Miami.
“I wrote different event listings for them,” she said. “I wrote about different events happening every week.”
Last summer she interned at Miami Community Newspapers, writing stories and learning about their podcasts.
This year, she’s applying for different summer programs, including Miami Montage.
Currently, Alvarez has been doing an internship at the Village of Palmetto Bay writing stories for their newsletter, Village Vibes, and is excited to see what her senior year brings.
