Miami Palmetto High School rising senior Haylee Hanson won the Advanced Placement Capstone Award for juniors at the end-of-the-year awards ceremony. She finished the second year of the program, including the Capstone research paper. Her topic focused on how TikTok influenced skincare purchasing habits of teenage girls.

“Over the summer my friends were sending me skincare product videos on TikTok,” she says. “The products would go viral.”

So, she studied how much of an impact TikTok had on skincare purchasing habits.

“There is an extreme correlation,” she says. “Every question I asked, there was an 80 percent chance they were watching TikTok videos as a review to decide whether to buy the product. They were discovering products, and they were using videos to justify their purchases. Most showed signs that they were using this platform to buy skincare products.”

She received 132 responses to her survey.

“They were mainly collected within the Miami region,” she says. “But 20-25 were from outside the state, to ensure it was nationwide. Tik Tok has taken the teenaged world by storm. I wanted to do my project, to see how this could bring up a bunch of negative aspects for the future. Impressionable teenagers are possibly getting negative ideas.”

Outside of school, Hanson is a member of the Palmetto Bay Youth Community Involvement Task Force.

“I led a holiday toy drive this winter,” she says. “We gathered well over 100 different toys.

It was a great success.”

The toys were donated to the Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. The donated toys include stuffed animals, remote control cars and Barbies.

“We collected for around three weeks,” she says. “We had a box in the village hall. That one collected the most. We also had one down in Coral Reef Park.”

Hanson will be chair when the group begins their work again.

“It was very successful this year and I think it could be even more successful next year,” she says. “I want to help organize so we can reach out to more school clubs and offer school service hours.”

She also wants to start more events.

“We’ve done teen movie nights,” she says. “I want to do more. And continue the toy drive.”

Community Involvement Task Force members discuss their ideas and work toward the best option.

“Over the summer we are going to be brainstorming more ideas,” she says.

Hanson says they are working on a project to conserve the Atala Butterfly.

At Palmetto, she is a varsity cheerleader. She was named Varsity Cheerleader MVP. She loves being a cheerleader.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for me to get involved in the school and build my leadership skills,” she says. “I emerged out of my shell after joining the team.”

She’s also a member of the Health Information Project.

“We go into freshman history classrooms and teach them about various health problems,” she says. “We give them signs that they can recognize in their immediate family, their friends, and themselves.”

Being a part of HIP has helped her with her public speaking and helped build her confidence.

She’s a member of the National Honor Society and will be the secretary of the French National Honor Society.

Hanson is considering applying to Florida State, the University of Florida, and the University of South Florida. She’s also looking at the University of Utah, the University of Michigan and UCLA.

She’s looking at majoring in business or marketing, with the idea that she will go on to law school.
