Last year, Westminster Christan School senior Jaden Bradford started the organization Project S.O.W. (Sharing Our Wonders).
“It’s a community outreach organization that promotes disability awareness and connects WCS high school students to our local special needs community,” she says.
She has conducted a couple of toy drives, and she has regularly volunteered at the Champion’s Room at Alpha and Omega Church.
“I did this year’s toy drives with the support of a local law firm and the Westminster community,” she says.
“We raised over 250 toys. We are hoping to give each student at least two toys. There are 80 students at the school,” she says.
They were expecting to deliver the unwrapped toys before the semester ended.
“The school sorts the toys to see which children get which toys,” she says.
She’s interested in helping the special needs community because her sister has special needs.
“We supported her school through the holiday toy drives,” she says. “Additionally, we support the Champion’s room at the Alpha and Omega Church where we volunteer with the kids while the parents are at church. We entertain the kids in the room. We do arts and crafts and puzzles.”
Bradford says they have participated in the Friendship Circle annual fundraising effort by having members of the club and others participate as a team in Walking4Friendship Walk-a-thon.
“We raised over 650 dollars for the cause,” she says.
Club members also worked with the WCS Social Studies National Honor Society to create 80 summer themed bags for students at a local special needs school in Miami, where her sister attends.
The WCS students also attended an attorney led presentation on what happens when a child turns 18 and how to establish guardianship.
Bradford is an athlete at WCS. She’s been the varsity girls golf captain for three years.
“This is the first year the school has ever made regionals. I’ve made all Miami-Dade Honorable Mention both sophomore and junior years. This year hasn’t come out yet” she says.
She’s been playing golf since she was six or seven. She’s ranked in the top 300 out of 2443 by Florida High School Athletic Association. She has been a member of the Gold Coast Junior Golf Foundation, as well as being a member of the South Florida PGA Junior Tour.
She has participated in golf tournaments outside of the high school season.
“They were weekend tournaments. Sometimes you play on both Saturday and Sunday. The tournament will be either 18 or 36 holes. Sometimes one of the days will get rained out so you come back later,” she says.
Her other school activities include being a member of the National Honor Society, the Science National Honor Society, Rho Kappa, Mu Alpha Theta, the World Language National Honor Society, and the English National Honor Society.
She received the Princeton Service Award last year and was an Advanced Placement Scholar for passing three or more AP exams with a three or above. The College Board gave her National Hispanic Recognition honors. She is currently nominated for Silver Knight in the Social Studies category.
Her community service includes volunteering at several summer camps, including the one at the Dave and Mary Alper Jewish Community Center and the Fun Camp at WCS.
Her senior and junior years she spent part of her summer working at Zumpano Castro Law as an Intern/ File Clerk, where she shadowed a team of lawyers and observed legal proceedings.
“I’m interested in being a special education attorney,” she says. “I’m planning on majoring in Political Science on a Pre-Law Track.”
