Positive people in Pinecrest : Julia Almirall
Julia Almirall

Westminster Christian School senior Julia Almirall loves music. She plays violin, viola and piano. She also writes music and wants to continue taking music in college.

“I want to do music production in college,” she says. “I want to continue to perform.”

Music production includes not only writing music but also includes the recording arts and the different aspects of music theory.

Almirall says she loves writing poetry and transferring it to music using software she has.

“I like being creative in that way,” she says. “I do love music composition. I could see going into that in college as well. I do have a love writing for music. And I want to explore writing and arranging in the future.”

Her college list includes the University of Miami, Berklee College of Music, NYU, Belmont University in Nashville, UCLA, USC, Florida International University, and the University of Florida.

She participates in the music club, Heartstrings, the orchestra club that was started by former Westminster students a few years ago.

“We’ve gone before as a small group to play at the Miami Cancer Institute,” she says.

“We’ve performed during Christmas in the lobby. People came by and listened. It made me happy to supply music therapy in a way.”

They’ve also performed at an adult living facility. The performances usually take place during the holidays.

For Valentine’s Day, she put together a fundraiser for the Music Mentor Network, a music charity, through Tri-M, the music honor society. They sold candygrams which included a musical performance.

“They would pay $3 for a performance,” she says. “We played romantic songs and go by the rooms.”

They plan to do a similar fundraiser for Christmas.

Her Tri-M co-president came up with a different Valentine’s Day project. He created flower bouquets, and they worked together to sell them at school events.

They combined the money and gave Music Mentor Network a total of $1,000.

At school, she participates on the digital production team. They do lighting and cameras and audio engineering for theater productions.

“I love doing lighting,” she says. “Depending on what role I have for chapel each week, I do either lighting or audio.”

Although digital production is a class, she doesn’t have room on her schedule for it so she takes it independently.

“I do all the choir or band or theater events and all the visual productions,” she says. “I started freshman year. I was new to it and a little intimidated. I got more comfortable. Now it’s such an enjoyable activity. I love being creative like that. Putting lights in a certain way, setting scenes, portraying emotions.”

She also volunteers at her church doing digital production.

“I’m around a ton of professionals who have done it for years,” she says. “It’s such a blessing.”

She’s president of Model United Nation, which is one of the most active clubs at school.

“It’s a got a lot of problem solving and public speaking which I wasn’t too good at when I joined in ninth grade,” she says.

Now she teaches others how to speak in public.

She’s been able to chair committees at Model U.N. conferences.

“I’ve come up the premise of the committee and come up with the rules,” she says. “It’s a different experience to be the chair vs delegate to the committee.”

Her public service includes donating plasma and blood four to five times a year despite the fact that she usually gets sick or nearly faints while donating. A message from a plasma recipient thanking her for donating made her resolve to continue donating.
