Pinecrest resident and MAST Academy senior Kush Mirchandani started Fine Point Tutoring almost four years ago to help struggling students. The tutoring service has done 280 hours of tutoring in six countries and 15 states.

“My goal with the project was to bridge the gap of education inequality and donate a percentage of proceeds to foundations dedicated to improving education around the world,” he says.

He started the tutoring service with his older sister Tanya, during the height of COVID lockdowns because of the educational disparities he saw with online education.

“Everyone has a different way of learning, and everyone needs a catered plan,” he says.

Starting with a few students his first year, things picked up after he took the PSAT. The results were not up to his expectations, so he embarked on a mission to significantly improve his score. He was successful in finding the right approach and became a National Merit Commended Scholar. He took that knowledge and applied it to his tutoring approach.

Now he not only tutors for a variety of subjects, but he also specializes in teaching kids how to maximize their SAT score through content and strategy.

“I currently tutor around 15 kids per test and have made resources for others available online,” he says.

He also does free group tutoring online.

“Over the four years, I’ve built a growing platform,” he says. “I am making an SAT app so more kids can get strategies and study on the go.”

Mirchandani already has a web-based SAT app for his private students. The mobile app came online a couple of months ago.

He and two friends created The Light Studio to develop apps and projects to help better society.

“We are currently working on building apps in the areas of Fire Safety, digital wellbeing and overcoming anxiety,” he says. “We work together to plan, design, and develop ideas to life with the goal of creating solutions for today’s generation to use.”

In fact, he’s been building websites since he was six. He learned about SEO and now helps private companies and non-profits with building their websites and brand aspects.

Mirchandani was born in St. Thomas. He lived there until 2017 when two category-five hurricanes, Irma and Maria, decimated the island.

He’s interested in computer science and business, having taken as many computer classes at MAST as possible, now taking a dual enrollment class on C++ at Miami-Dade College.

He plans to apply for early admission to the University of Florida and USC. Other colleges he’ll apply to include the University of Michigan, Stanford, and Harvard.

His computer science accomplishments also include creating the MAST Internship sign-out system and his internship at NOAA where he works with Oracle databases.

Outside of school, Mirchandani volunteers with the Sindhi Association of Florida.

“I help them with media creation and help with community events,” he says.

Through the association, he volunteered at Lotus House. During that event, they went to Lotus House, made donations and helped clean the facility.

“Some of us helped in the kitchen, some with the resident floors, and some with the herb garden,” he says.

At MAST, he’s a member of Mu Alpha Theta and the National Honor Society, Historian of the Science National Honor Society, and both team captain and Vice President of the Robotics Club.

He’s also in the International Robotics Society, IRHS. Society members teach MAST Middle School students about robotics.

Mirchandani hopes to further his experience in both business and computer science, wanting to continue to make new projects to help people all over the world.
