Senior Lucas Anson is Miami Palmetto High School’s Silver Knight nominee in Digital and Interactive Media.
Anson is the executive producer of the Television Production program at Palmetto, overseeing the daily broadcast.
“We also put on two of the biggest events at Palmetto. Teacher Trivia – we host a teacher trivia competition between teachers representing grade levels, testing knowledge of the schoolwork their kids are taking and Palmetto trivia,” he says. “That usually takes place later in the year, about a month or two before school ends to keep morale up.”
The other big event is the Mr. Panther contest.
“Mr. Panther is the biggest event at Palmetto by attendance. It is a holistic talent competition between people at Palmetto featuring videos shot over the course of the year and multiple dance numbers and competition.”
Anson says they begin working on Mr. Panther early in the school year, running TV Production ads and an advertising campaign to announce the theme for the upcoming event.
“We also have a QR code link that people can scan to indicate interest,” he says. “Though the exact number varies to match the theme and capabilities, we normally end up casting between 20 and 30 contestants.”
The show is scheduled for Jan. 29 and will be held in the auditorium.
“As the executive producer, I’m tasked with organizing the production of all videos and broadcasts,” he says. “I do have a passion for making some of the videos myself. I also delegate assigned videos among my amazingly talented crew.”
The summer following his sophomore year, Anson and some other students in TV production were hired by CNN to help in the coverage of former President Donald Trump’s arraignment in downtown Miami.
“I was tasked with coordinating deliveries, invoices, relaying messages and most importantly, going inside the courthouse to watch the arraignment unfold and report information back to our near-by satellite truck,” he says. “Due to my contribution, I received bylines on several CNN articles about the arraignment and additionally appeared as an interview subject on CNN national news.”
Anson is an active member of the Health Information Project.
“Which uses peer instruction to better educate students about the health and safety issues that might occur during high school,” he says. “In HIP I appreciate the added value behind words. Within HIP, the students learn from their peers, and I find that this student-to-student connection cements the knowledge better within them.”
He’s also a member of the Class of 2025 Cabinet, a member of the National Honor Society, and a member of the French National Honor Society.
He’s playing Fall Ball Lacrosse and hopes to make the varsity Lacrosse team this year.
Outside of school, Anson earned his Boy Sout Eagle rank earlier this year.
“My project was an enhancement to the Hidden Lake Environmental Education Center in the Everglades National Park,” he says. “For my project, I led a team in constructing five benches, a dish drying rack and a portion of dock.”
The existing dock flooded over every wet season and to counteract this, he constructed a platform to be placed atop the dock to lift the dry surface out of the water as needed.
It took nine months from planning to completion.
“The benches were designed to be portable so that they could be transported in an out of the site when extreme weather approached,” he says.
In college, Anson plans to study Business Administration or Management. He’s applied to Florida State University, the University of Florida Georgia Tech, SUNY Binghampton and the University of Virginia.
