Positive people in Pinecrest : Myles Messinger
Myles Messinger

Music is Miami Palmetto High School junior Myles Messinger’s passion. This year, Messinger was chosen to play clarinet in the Miami-Dade Superintendent’s Honors Band.

“The Superintendent’s Honor Band was full of people who are really committed,” he says. “I was the only student from Palmetto to be a part of it.”

At Palmetto, Messinger is a member of the Symphonic Band. The band participates in the Florida Bandmasters Association Music Performance Assessment, where they received three superiors and an excellent this year at the district level.

He also participates in the Solo and Ensemble competition. This school year, he received a plus in every category for his solo with an overall rating of superior.

Although he’s a musician through and through, music will not be his career. He wants to go to medical school.

His grandfather was a radiologist and his uncle is a neuroradiologist at Baptist and South Miami Hospital. Radiology or dermatology are the two specialties that interest Messinger.

Outside of school, Messinger is a member of the Pinecrest Youth Advisory Council.

“One of the things I enjoy the most is hosting events, and having them be a part of YAC,” he says.

He even enjoys listening to parts of the full village council meetings.

“This year we had to learn about a new resolution that Pinecrest was considering,” he says.

The YAC hosted a holiday movie night where they played the movie ELF at Evelyn Greer Park.

“Everyone seemed to enjoy it,” he says, “We reflected about what we did and what we could improve on.”

Messinger was also elected Secretary for the 2025-2026 school year.

He’s also a member of the Temple Beth Am Social Justice Fellowship.

“We are doing volunteer-based community programs,” he says. “We worked on a garden that gave healthy and nutritious produce to residents in Opa-locka.”

Earlier this spring, group members went on a mission trip to Guatemala for four days.

“This was my first time out of the country,” he says. “I learned that some countries like Guatemala need our help. They need people to volunteer.”

While there, they built blocks out of cardboard and recycled paper and created walls. They also laid the concrete foundation for a classroom.

He’s also the Communications Vice President for BAFTY, the youth group at Beth Am.

Messinger has diverse interests, and he likes to collaborate with others. In 2023, he and his ninth-grade teacher worked together to develop the Miami Digital Literacy Project.

“What we do, we make and host interactive and engaging workshops and presentations for students in ninth grade and senior citizens,” he says. “We pair up a senior citizen with a member of the organization.”

They teach seniors how to use their phones, including sharing pictures or hosting Zoom meetings.

They also reach out to freshmen at the beginning of the school year.

“We teach them how to manage time, email, the dos and don’ts about AI, and organization and how to manage passwords. We teach them research skills. We have also been teaching them how to form an argument with evidence to form their argument using tools like Civic Online Reasoning.”

He likes discussing issues at the All-Sides Forum, a group that meets on Wednesdays to talk about issues that they care deeply about.

“We focus a lot about the tariffs, Ukraine and women’s rights,” he says.

At school, he’s the Vice President of Academic Excellence for Rho Kappa, the history honor society, elected Vice President of Tri-M, the music honor society, the National Honor Society and member of the Forensic Investigative Academy Club.

He plays singles and doubles on the GMAC Championship badminton team.
