Positive people in Pinecrest : Nicolette Foschini

Westminster Christian School senior Nicolette Foschini is passionate about the environment.

“My focus is marine life and the water itself,” she says.

The concern about the environment is because of the negative effect pollution has on things everyone loves, like going to the beach or going fishing.

Her alarm is such that she and one of her friends plan on talking to school students about the current state of Florida waters, pollution and marine life.

They will stress not just awareness, but also a conclusion, a clean-up she is organizing. There will be a competition between the four schools to see who could collect the most garbage.

The four proposed schools are expected to be Westminster, Gulliver Prep, Our Lady of Lourdes High School and possibly Palmer Trinity School.

The clean-up will likely be in Coconut Grove in November or December.

Her passion for the environment is one of the reasons she’s worked with Miami Waterkeeper to fight for sustainable fishing and cleaner water in Florida.

“Since sophomore year, I’ve wanted to create my own initiative,” she says. “I was brainstorming to bring more awareness to students. Miami Waterkeeper has the Junior Ambassador program.”

Foschini says they bring physical awareness of the situation by utilizing things like park and beach clean-ups.

They also have classroom work.

“They equip you with the knowledge of how the eco-system works,” she says. “They also teach civic engagement skills. How to write letters to local policy makers encouraging enacting policies. I did that program for sophomore year and came back as an alumnus for junior year.”

She still wanted to work closely with the association, so she became their first high school intern.

“I have a love for photography,” she says. “I wanted to incorporate photography and marketing. I took photos at their events. Those pictures were then filed in their marketing database. I assisted in content creation for their social media accounts on Instagram and LinkedIn.”

Foschini has taken as many photography classes as possible including Advanced Placement 2-D Art and Design. Last year she was a yearbook photographer.

“I would take photos of activities and club events,” she says. “I did a lot with graphic design.

She also took a lot of sports action shots.

“It’s my favorite, because of how challenging it is to take pictures of someone in motion,” she says.

Her photography is so good, she was a finalist in the Beaux Arts Competition her junior year.

“The photo was displayed at the University of Miami,” she says. “It’s still exhibited on-line.”

She uses a creative approach and lots of Photoshop for her artistic pictures.

Foschini uses her design skills to create a monthly calendar of events that is posted on the Westminster website.

“It lists all the potential volunteer activities for the month,” she says. “I put the category of the event and how to volunteer in there if students are interested.”

She is vice president of the National Honor Society. She’s been a member of the Green Club since freshman year. This year she’s treasurer.

“We coordinate fundraising for organizations,” she says.

They focus on the World Wildlife Organization.

“This year I’m going to be a peer counselor,” she says. “I’m going to counsel and mentor students. We’ll discuss relevant issues high school students face.”

She worked on fundraising for Miami Waterkeeper for Give Miami Day.

“I raised $1100,” she says. “I reached out to people from my school.”

Foschini has been named an Emerald Scholar, Westminster’s prestigious honors program.
