Positive people in Pinecrest : Sabrina Pereyra
Sabrina Pereyra

Westminster Christian School senior Sabrina Pereyra loves soccer. In fact, she attended the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. It’s the fourth World Cup she’s attended.

Pereyra is interested in following her dad’s footsteps. Her dad is a soccer commentator, sports journalist and reporter for ESPN.

“I’ve always been interested in the sport,” she says. “Growing up around soccer, I always listened to my dad. I like watching it when he does. I like hearing his discussion, and everything he has to say.”

She helps her dad with his social media. She started when Covid shutdowns resulted in everyone working from home.

“I got into the bad habit of being on the phone and social media,” she says.

So, she decided to use the phone to be productive.

She began collecting the most interesting messages people sent her father through Instagram.

“On his podcast, he has a section where he answers fan questions and those are the questions that he answers,” she says.

She also makes the social media graphics for the podcast. She says when she starting making the graphics, her father’s podcast listenership improved.

“Social media has an influence,” she says.

She was happy that she was able to shadow the senior communications director for InterMiami CF, the soccer club, on a game day. Pereyra hopes to be able to do that again one day.

Pereyra enjoys doing community service.

“I’ve done a great share of beach clean-ups,” she says. “Living in Miami it’s a big thing, going to the beach.”

On one clean-up, Pereyra worked with a non-profit called The Tropics. She also did one with school.

“We did a school community service trip, where we went to Crandon Park and Key Biscayne,” she says. “We collected 70 pounds of trash.”

They separated the trash into piles.

“Anything that could be reused we sent to a recycling place, and whatever couldn’t we threw away,” she says.

Because cancer runs in her family and she wants to help others who have struggled with cancer the way her family has, Pereyra volunteers with Caring for Chemo, a school club.

“We raise money for cancer awareness and research,” she says. “We collected little snacks and goodies for cancer patients like fuzzy socks, notepads, and ginger candies. We distributed them to the patients.”

Pereyra is a member of the Period Club, which raises awareness about menstruation.

“We do a lot of things around the school, collecting pads and menstrual products for women,” she says. “We stock the bathrooms at our school as well so all the girls in school have access to menstrual products.”

She is also a member of the Love for Lotus Club, which collects toiletry items and clothing for the Lotus House Women’s Shelter in Miami.

Over the years she’s volunteered at a bunch of the summer camps held at Westminster.

At school, she and five other seniors and three teachers are working on a school-wide newspaper and news broadcast.

“We meet every Monday and organize logistics behind the news broadcast,”

The plan called for starting a club for the elementary school to teach the kids about news broadcasts.

She is a member of the National Honor Society, the Foreign Language Honor Society, Rho Kappa, the Science National Honor Society and the National English Honor Society.

She’s already been accepted into Florida State University, the University of Alabama, and Florida International University. She’s waiting on Miami-Dade Honor College, the University of Florida, University of Miami, University of Central Florida, Richmond and the American International University in London. She’s majoring in Communications.
