Positive people in Pinecrest : Scott Gould
Scott Gould

Scott Gould is the Miami Palmetto High School Silver Knight nominee in Speech. His strong commitment to volunteering has earned him almost a thousand community service hours so far. Gould’s Silver Knight project is The Bake Sale 305.

“It’s a nonprofit fundraiser I set up during COVID,” he says. “Our mission is to feed the hungry and combat food insecurity in South Florida. All the money goes to organizations such as Health in the Hood, and Food Rescue Miami.”

Gould says the organizations were big social media posters when he was researching non-profits with his sister.

“One is in Overtown,” he says. “They do a lot of work in providing hot meals. The other one provides groceries and hot meals.”

Because of The Bake Sale 305, he’s been able to provide more than 1,000 meals to those who suffer from food insecurity.

“I’ve raised over $10,000 through The Bake Sale,” he says.

He started it in eighth grade with the first bake sale taking place in May 2020.

“I bake the cookies – and I distribute them to the front door and if they don’t live in driving range, I ship them to them,” he says. “During COVID I did a lot of baking. I homed in on chocolate chip cookies. It’s my own recipe.”

The initial cookies were so large, he had to scale them down so he could fit a dozen into a bag.

He sells the cookies to friends and family although the National Honor Society also spread the word, and he gets orders through Instagram.

He enjoys experimenting with recipes.

“I like to be in the kitchen,” he says. “It’s a way I express myself. It’s something I don’t plan on stopping. I use my imagination and free base in the kitchen. It lets me take a step back from my schoolwork and extracurriculars.”

Those extracurriculars include being the Student Council President.

“Our main goal was to increase student involvement and representation,” he says. “This year our house of representative is identical to the representation of the school. I felt that was important.”

He’s a member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, the Science National Honor Society, the National Business Honor Society, and he competes in competitions for Robotics.

He’s also the vice president of the Health Information Project.

“It really is important to open the eyes of the freshmen,” he says. “There are serious issues that may impact them. It’s okay to struggle. High school isn’t a place you should struggle. It’s a place you have fun and be yourself.”

Gould is a four-year starter and a two-year captain on the varsity lacrosse team at Palmetto. He also plays on travel club team, the Miami Lacrosse Club.

In college he wants to major in electrical or computer engineering. He’s applied to the University of Florida, University of Texas, the University of Michigan, Georgia Tech University, and the University of Illinois. He’s been accepted to the University of Central Florida, the University of Georgia and Florida State.

He tutors math and science through Tutoring for Tomorrow.

Outside of school he’s a member of the Social Justice Program at Temple Beth Am.

“I am an advocate for social justice issues,” he says. “It incorporates Jewish learning and social activities,”

He traveled to Guatemala where the teens built a school out of recyclable materials.

“It opened my eyes to people who have pretty much nothing, but some of the happiest people I have ever met,” he says.

In 2025 he’ll go to Colombia for another mission trip.
