Miami Palmetto High School rising senior Thibault Carbonell continues in his job as the treasurer for the Class of 2027. This is his fourth year taking care of business for the class.
He’s done so well he won the Outstanding Service Award at the end-of-the-year awards ceremony. He’s also won Panther on the Move Award and the PAW Award.
Carbonell plays volleyball for Palmetto. He played Junior Varsity during his freshman season and Varsity since then. This past season was a good one. He was named an Honorable Mention on the Miami Herald’s All Miami-Dade Volleyball team.
Carbonell’s looking forward to next season because he feels the composition of the team will be strong.
“This year was like a developmental year for us,” he says. “Next year we will definitely be good. We will have like 10 seniors.”
He also plays club volleyball year-round. Carbonell is on the Miami United Volleyball’s National team. With the club team, he’s traveled to tournaments in California, Chicago and Las Vegas.
“My team usually plays well,” he says. “We won the one in Indianapolis a year ago and we place in the top ten every time.”
Those tournaments often draw 50 teams from around the country.
The sport is on a growth curve and some of his teammates went on to solid Division One programs, but he’d rather concentrate on academics instead of a life as a D-1 athlete.
“I’m doing it just for fun,” he says. “I think I’m better off with my academics getting into a school like the University of Florida.”
As the college application season draws near, he’s weighing his interests. This summer, he’s wrestling two very different majors. One is Business Finance and the second is some type of science that would lead to medical school and becoming a doctor.
“I’m very good at science and good at remembering things,” he says. “It’s a pretty interesting job as well, but it’s a lot of schooling.”
His current college list includes UF, Northwestern, UCLA, the University of California at Santa Barbara and the University of Chicago.
Because sports keeps him busy, Carbonell keeps his list of extracurriculars small. In addition to his duties as class treasurer, he’s also a member of the National Honor Society. That doesn’t mean he isn’t involved in school. His duties as an office aide have him helping around the school wherever he is needed.
Each fall, Carbonell volunteers at the annual Haunted House, doing what he can, including donning costumes to scare the kids who walk through it.
This past year he helped build the haunted house and donated plastic pumpkins for decorations.
He also helps at school events such as graduation, working behind the scenes.
“I’ve helped pass out caps and gowns,” he says. “I’ve helped move things.”
One of the fun things he was able to do was find teachers in the audience and bring them behind the stage so they could walk on stage when their kids received their diplomas.
As treasurer, he was automatically on the class board, so he worked on all class events such as Panther Prowl and this year, the Senior Picnic.
He also dealt with the details and distribution of items from the sale of Etta’s Bundt Cakes.
“There were two options,” he says. “You could go online and have it delivered to your house or to the school. Those delivered to the school, we had to pass them out to the students in the span of a week.”
Most of the deliveries were made in two to three days.
