Positive people in Pinecrest : William Albury

Miami Palmetto Senior High School senior William Albury recently pitched his own project to Volunteering Miami, the organization that helps Palmetto students match with organizations that need volunteers. Albury recently joined Volunteering Miami.

Albury is into the arts and creativity. He’s been volunteering at the Crayola Imagine Arts Academy, an arts camp.

“They do birthday parties and after school camps,” he says. “I’ve seen how much these kids light up when they get to do art.”

He came up with the idea to start an organization that collects and then donates art supplies.

“I know there are a lot of women’s and children’s shelters,” he says. “I’d try to find one that receives the least donations so we can target that.”

The project would set up donation bins across Miami and online wish lists for items needed.

The idea is to give kids the opportunity to express themselves.

While he hasn’t come up with the final name for the project, he does want to dedicate it to his aunt and his grandmother who have both suffered from Alzheimer’s.

“They are both into art,” he says. “I’m ready to go.”

At the beginning of the summer, all he needed was the approval from the Volunteering Miami board. However, he plans to go forward even if Volunteering Miami decides against sponsorship.

His community service project also includes organizing free art classes for kids.

“They will paint backgrounds on a canvas, or use clay and put it on the canvas,” he says. “I really want to set up donations across Miami. And set up wish lists.”

Although just now going into his senior year, Albury has already had two marketing internships.

“I had an internship with the founder and CEO of Felicite Apparel, a women’s clothing brand,” he says. “It’s been going since I’ve been in high school.”

For the past three summers, he’s helped the company with their social media.

“For the photo shoots I help location staff,” he says. “I help inventory items and accessories during the shoot.”

The second internship was with jewelry brand Henri Girl, in Miami. He does content creation and social media. He also packs orders and ships items.

At the art camp where he volunteers, he not only helps the kids with the artwork, he also takes photos to post on social media.

“I love working with kids so much,” he says. “It makes me so happy when I can break things down so they can understand things. They can draw a picture and their faces light up.”

At Palmetto, he is a member of the English Honor Society. He attends meetings where they have book swaps and collect books and toys to donate. They also have games. A recent game asked, who said it, Taylor Swift or Shakespeare.

He’s in LEO Club which organizes blood drives. He joins the newspaper staff this coming year.

He finds out the first day of school whether he will be a writer or a photographer.

His passion is photography. He has an Instagram page for Albury Photo to highlight the favorite photos he’s taken.

“I think like portrait style. I do a lot of my friends Instagram pictures.”

He started taking pictures when his mom got a new camera. He’d run off with it to take pictures. Some of his favorite subjects are his cats, Max and Ruby.

In college, he wants to go into marketing, advertising or business. He’s not quite sure yet.

His college list includes Syracuse, Pepperdine, the College of Charleston, the University of Wisconsin (Madison), and Southern Melodist University.
