Positive people in Pinecrset : Daniela Corradine
Daniela Corradine

When Westminster Christian School senior Daniela Corradine was in first grade, her mother was diagnosed with stage four breast and bone cancer. Even though the odds were against her, Corradine’s mom lived for 11 years more.

In that time, Corradine learned a lot about the needs of someone in the hospital. When she was a sophomore in high school, Corradine started her club called Caring for Chemo.

“I know the struggle people are going through this face,” she says.

Club members put together care packages for patients at the Miami Cancer Institute at Baptist Hospital.

“I know how these care packages help people,” she says.

The care packages include 10 to12 items such as scarfs, fuzzy socks, stickers, stress balls, tissues, stickers, notebooks, pens, Chapstick, Udderly Smooth Hand Lotion and handwritten notes written by club members.

“To show they are not alone,” she says. “It’s a hard situation to be in, just so they know people are with them.”

Over the past three years they have donated more than 150 gift packages, about 50 a year.

Club members fundraise for high quality items they put in the basket.

“Every December we have a hot chocolate sale,” she says. “We have club members donate something. Just promoting it, we have gotten a lot of donations.”

They make approximately $250 from the hot chocolate sale.

“The rest comes from donations,” she says. “We end up with about$ 450-500.”

They can receive donations through their Instagram account, Caringforchemo.

Corradine says she wants the club to continue at Westminster after she graduates so she’s been looking for someone to take it over at the end of the year.

“I have some sophomores who have been involved with the club,” she says. “At the end of the year, I’ll talk to them about ordering everything and getting things coordinated.”

Along with the Caring for Chemo club, Corradine is one of the Secretariat for Westminster’s Model United Nations and organizes conferences for the school.

She has attended numerous conferences both virtual and in-person. Sophomore year the conferences were virtual. Her junior year the year they went to conferences at the University of Florida and Palmer Trinity School.

They decided to grow the Model UN Club so they hosted a conference in September attended by Palmer Trinity and St. Andrews School.

Model UN members plan to attend a conference in Washington, D.C.

“This is the first out of state trip our club has ever done, which is exciting,” she says.

Corradine has coordinated blood drives for the National Honor Society, she’s a member of Mu Alpha Theta, the Science National Honor Society, the Foreign Langue National Honor Society the English National Honor Society and Rho Kappa.

She’s a member of the Thespian Honor Society. Corradine has participated in theater for the past six years. She was in the ensemble for Lion King her freshman year and took part in the school production of one act plays, and selections from different shows her sophomore year.

This fall theater students attended the district competitions and earned excellents and superiors in the large group production and one acts.

Outside of school, Corradine has played soccer since she was three. She’s a member of the Tiki Taka Soccer Club and has been captain.

For college, she’s applied to Vanderbilt, University of Florida, New York University, the University of Miami and Northeastern. She has been accepted to the University of Georgia and Clemson. She plans to take biology in college and then go on to medical school.
