Miami Palmetto High senior Steven Wolf has been volunteering at Friendship Circle since he was in seventh grade. Now he’s a president of the organization.

At Friendship Circle, sponsored by the Kendall Chabad, a volunteer is paired with a special needs child.

“Every other Sunday I participate with that child,” Wolf says. “The idea is to give kids the ability to have fun and make new friends. It’s made a difference in my life since I started it.”

Throughout the year, Wolf works with the same child. The pairings are done at the beginning of the school year.

“I’ve worked with kids of all ages. From five years old to kids older than me,” he says.

This year, he’s been paired with the same child he worked with last year.

Wolf and the other presidents (there are several of them) meet as a group with the director to plan events for the coming year.

At Palmetto, Wolf is the vice president of the Jewish Student Union.

“We are going to meet once a month and basically we talk about any important events or issues happening in the Jewish community,” he says. “Being vice president of the club, we’ve met already once to plan the first three or four meetings.”

Friendship Circle and the chance to work with the kids is an important aspect of Wolf’s life. Another important aspect is sports.

“At school, outside of school, my whole life I’ve been big into sports,” he says. “I love going to sporting events.”

As a child he participated in the Beth Am Basketball League, Danny Berry Baseball and flag football.

“I’ve always grown up in the (Dave and Mary Alper) Jewish Community Center. I work at the J at the basketball gym,” he says. “I work with the elementary school children as a coach or scorekeeping. It all depends on what day it is.”

Wolf helps the elementary school kids with their drills and perfecting the style they play.

“They all want to be a hero,” he says. “I have to teach them that it’s important not to be the hero but be the team player.”

When the kids are sorted into teams, they continue to practice. They’ll play two games and then have a practice so he and the other coaches can teach them what areas they need to improve upon.

He loves working at the J and he loves working with the kids.

“It’s really fun,” he says. “I grew up there. My brothers worked there. I love it.”

In the summer he’s worked at a counselor at the JCC. However, this summer he was a junior counselor at the sleep away camp he attended as a s child – Camp Shalom of Central Florida.

“My first year as a camper was 2010, my last 2014,” he says.

In 2016, he worked with the fifth and sixth graders.

“They participated in all activities,” he says. “In all sports, water sports at the lake. Water skiing or wake boarding.”

They even had a rock wall for the kids to climb.

For college, Wolf would prefer to go to a school in-state. His top two options are Florida and Florida State. He’s also applied to the University of Central Florida.

While he’s still undecided on his major, he is considering something in business like business management. Eventually he’d love to work in professional sports.

“The dream is to be the head of a sports team or a general manager,” he says.
