Life in South Florida offers unique subject matter for artistic pursuits, like the endless sunshine, beautiful beaches, and charismatic wildlife. This was the inspiration for Councilwoman Jenifer N. Bailey’s selection of Homestead Center for the Arts as her inaugural Artist in the Spotlight.

“I could not be more honored to take over the Artist in the Spotlight,” remarked Councilwoman Bailey.  “I have always loved art and I have a quote in my office upstairs that pretty much says it all: ‘the earth without art is just eh.’”

This month features 17 individual artists that make up the exhibit titled “Life in South Florida.” The artists featured are Ada Catala, Barbara Livieri, Brandon Clark, Claudia Masella, Diane Larry, Hugh Hudson, Inna Malostovker, Kim Gimenez, Marie Ferraro, Marie-Pilar Geada, Marta Cubillas, Mimi Dickson, Mimi Meyerson, Noelia Montaner, Patricia Vettorello, Terre Rybovich, and Tonya Howington. They present a wide variety of artistic styles presented through paper piecing, photography, abstract painting, acrylic painting, oil painting, watercolor painting, and charcoal.

On Tuesday, January 25th, there was a reception open to the public at the Seminole Theatre lobby, located at 18 N. Krome Ave, Homestead, FL 33030. The art display is currently available for viewing at the Seminole Theatre during business hours.

About the Homestead Center for the Arts

The Homestead Center for the Arts was chartered in 1976 as part of the Bicentennial celebration. One of their goals is to promote the cultural and educational arts, appreciation for artistic endeavors, and to act as a network for not-for-profit affiliates. Today, they have twenty local artistic organizations affiliated with the HCA. This relationship sets up a network for communication among the arts organizations, identifying common needs and interests. The role that HCA seeks to play is one of support and collaboration with its affiliate organizations.

About the Artist in the Spotlight Program

Councilwoman Jenifer N. Bailey is now championing the Artist in the Spotlight program originally spearheaded by former Councilman Stephen R. Shelley.  The Artist in the Spotlight program was created in 2010 and is curated to highlight the talents of local artists and allow them to showcase their artwork to the local community.  If you are interested in participating or know of a local artist in the area from Broward, Dade, or Monroe Counties, please contact Councilwoman Bailey’s office at (305) 224-4454 or jday@cityofhomestead.com.  Artists who live in or near the City of Homestead will be given preference.
