At the March Special Council presentation, Councilwoman Patricia Fairclough-Staggers presented a proclamation to two organizations that have positively impacted the Homestead community in honor of Women’s History Month. The two groups recognized were the Dade County Alumnae of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated and the Dade County Alumnae of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated Miami Alumnae Chapter. These organizations were born from the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated and are a group of college educated women committed to scholarship, sisterhood, and service.
“I am excited during Women’s History Month to recognize some powerful women in the community who are doing the work to empower and inspire fellow women throughout Miami-Dade County,” remarked Councilwoman Fairclough-Staggers. “These organizations help to lift up and amplify voices of underserved populations, all while striving for equity and representation in the community.”
The President of the Miami Alumnae Chapter Stephanie Steel-Nelson stepped up to the dais to receive the proclamation and said a few words “We are here to provide a service to the community and throughout the world. We are standing firm with the legacy of our founders. They wanted to make sure they made an impact on this world and we make sure we continue to do so.”
Commissioner Kionne McGhee also presented a special proclamation on behalf of the Miami-Dade County Commission to declare March 16, 2022 as Miami Alumnae Chapter Day.

The Miami Alumnae Chapter was established in 1941 and has served the South Florida community for over 80 years. They participate in notable charitable efforts while focusing on social action and political awareness. They also organize forums, workshops, and events that raise awareness for causes such as sickle cell and breast cancer. Miami Alumnae Chapter is a chapter of movement and as well as action. Their goal is to make a solid impact on the community through economic development, international awareness and involvement, physical/mental health, educational development, and political awareness.

Dade County Alumnae of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated was chartered in 1981. For over 40 years they have confronted the challenges of African Americans and all Americans. They host many programs and public service initiatives to educate the community. Their initiatives include workshops like resume writing, sickle cell disease, AIDS awareness, and many more. Dade County Alumnae of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated leads by example and has been at the forefront of community service in Miami Dade County, celebrating 40 years of Sisterhood, Scholarships and services.
