On Monday, November 10, a day prior Veterans Day, Councilwoman Judy Waldman will be presiding over a very special service to commemorate the past, present and future military men and woman and their selfless contributions towards the safety and liberty of our republic.
The service will take place at 4 pm at the Palms Woodlawn Cemetery located at 27100 Old Dixie Highway and all are welcome to take part. At the conclusion of the ceremony, small American flags will be provided for all in attendance to place on the graves of the various veterans interred there.
It was because of one particular veteran, her father, U.S. Navy gunner Wyatt Abshire, that compelled Councilwoman Waldman and her family to leave the familiar confines of her native Kentucky to a lesser known city in South Florida called Homestead. It was in Homestead, in 1960, where Mr. Abshire was able to seek treatment at the full service veteran’s hospital located at the Homestead Air Reserve Base (HARB.)
“It was my father and the indelible memories that I carry from my childhood that have inspired me to do all that I can to make life easier for others with my shared experience,” said Councilwoman Waldman. “I understand the strife and difficulties that arise not only for the wounded veterans themselves but for the families that support them. I would encourage those in our community to participate in this very special annual event as a token of respect for the generations of veterans that have been wounded or have fallen to preserve the ideals of this great nation.”
