The first-ever Homestead Poetry Slam was a resounding success, bringing together poets, performers, and community members for an unforgettable evening of spoken word and cultural celebration. Hosted at the historic Seminole Theatre on Friday, February 21st, 2025, the event honored Black History Month through the power of poetry, storytelling, and artistic expression.

The Poetry Slam featured a lineup of talented local poets who took the stage to share their thought-provoking pieces, each offering a unique perspective on history, identity, and resilience. The audience was captivated by powerful performances that highlighted the depth and richness of Black culture, sparking moments of reflection and inspiration.

The competition was judged by a five-judge panel, ensuring a fair and dynamic contest that recognized the most compelling performances of the night. In the end, Salam the Poet took home the $500 cash prize with their impactful poem, “Slices of Heaven”, which resonated deeply with the crowd.

Homestead Poetry Slam 2025

The Homestead Poetry Slam was held just one day before the city’s traditional Black History Month Block Party, set to take place on Saturday, February 22nd, 2025, at Losner Park. This beloved annual celebration will feature live music, with an opening act by Queen K, with The Legendary Wailers as the headliner.

The City of Homestead extends its gratitude to all the poets, attendees, and supporters who made the inaugural Homestead Poetry Slam such a success. Plans are already in motion for next year’s event, with hopes of making it an even bigger and more impactful tradition.
