This past Sunday, I found myself at the Homestead-Miami Speedway for the NASCAR Cup Series race, and let me tell you, it wasn’t just about the roaring engines and the thrill of competition. It was about family, tradition, community, and pride – the essence of NASCAR.
Kyle Larson took home the win that day, dominating the track in a brilliant performance that reminded us all why he’s one of the sport’s finest. But as much as the race itself was exhilarating, it was everything that happened before the green flag dropped that truly made the day special.
Arriving at the Speedway, you could feel the energy and excitement in the air. Families were everywhere, from the smallest toddlers in checkered-flag onesies to the seasoned fans sporting hats and jackets adorned with their favorite drivers’ numbers. NASCAR doesn’t just welcome families – it’s built for them. The Kids Zone was bustling with laughter and smiles, offering games, activities, and plenty of ways to keep young race fans entertained.
Right next to it, the NASCAR Experience gave fans the chance to see what it’s like to be behind the wheel, with simulators and interactive displays that brought the high-speed thrill to life. It wasn’t just for the kids either – I saw just as many adults lining up to get a taste of what it’s like to pilot a race car around the track.
One of the most unique opportunities was being able to walk right up to the Start-Finish line and sign it. Fans left their mark, writing messages of support for their favorite drivers and sharing their passion for NASCAR with a simple gesture of a name or a cheer. It’s one of those moments where you realize that this sport belongs to the fans as much as it does to the teams.
Behind the scenes, I caught a glimpse of the pit crews preparing tires and equipment before the race. These unsung heroes of NASCAR are truly remarkable. The precision and teamwork that go into getting everything ready are nothing short of amazing. There’s a kind of quiet hustle that belies the chaos that’s to come once the race is underway.

Of course, no NASCAR event would be complete without some music and entertainment. Pre-race concerts and shows kept the crowd pumped up, while driver appearances and introductions gave everyone a chance to cheer on their favorites. NASCAR truly brings out people from all walks of life, and it was inspiring to see the diverse crowd united by a shared love of speed and competition.
It was also great to see some familiar faces among the crowd, including Homestead PD Sheriff Mario Knapp, Commissioners Raquel A. Regalado and Keon Hardemon, and Clerk of the Court and Comptroller, Juan Fernandez-Barquin. It’s moments like these that remind us of the local pride and support that fuel this event year after year.
NASCAR has always been about honoring those who serve, and there’s a deep respect for our military, veterans, and law enforcement. The sport doesn’t just talk about appreciation – it shows it, whether it’s through pre-race tributes or special recognitions throughout the day. The support and inclusion of the Hispanic community also stood out, with NASCAR Latino making waves to ensure that everyone feels welcome and part of the action.
The diversity of the drivers reflects this commitment too. Daniel Suárez made history as the first Mexican-born driver to win a NASCAR Cup Series race, and Aric Almirola, whose parents immigrated from Cuba, continues to represent with pride and determination. Nick Sanchez, the Cuban-American driver of the No. 48 Big Machine Racing Chevrolet in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, shows that the passion for racing runs deep in our Hispanic and Latino communities.
For anyone who still thinks NASCAR is just cars going in circles, I challenge you to experience it firsthand. It’s not just about the speed – it’s about community, pride, family, and making memories that will last a lifetime. Sunday’s race at Homestead-Miami Speedway was proof that NASCAR is more than just a sport – it’s a way of life that brings people together from every background.
Kyle Larson may have claimed the victory on the track, but the real winners were the fans who got to witness it all – from the Kids Zone to the pits, from the concerts to the checkered flag. It was a perfect day to celebrate NASCAR’s legacy of family, tradition, and the unbreakable bond between fans and the sport they love.
