As it celebrates its 50th year, SHPE: Leading Hispanics in STEM, a national organization representing more than 20,000 Hispanic professionals and college students in STEM, welcomed a record-breaking 15,000 students, industry leaders, and academics to its 48th annual SHPE National Convention in Anaheim, California.
The Convention, held from October 30 through November 3, 2024, is the largest gathering of Hispanic STEM talent in the nation, featuring over 350 exhibitors, 700 interview booths, and a list of top attending sponsors including Visionary Sponsor Chevron, Apple, Bank of America, 3M, Abbott, Amazon, Boston Scientific, Dow, Dupont, HII, Microsoft, Wells Fargo, Exxon Mobil Corp., and many more.
According to the Pew Research Center, 81% of U.S. Hispanics believe having role models in STEM can encourage young Hispanics to pursue careers in these fields. The importance of STEM fields cannot be overstated, with projections indicating a staggering 11.8 million job openings by 2033, representing a substantial 10.8% growth trajectory, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
“In 2023, Hispanics accounted for 19% of all U.S. workers, but only 9% of STEM jobs were filled by Hispanic professionals,” says Suzanna Valdez Wolfe, CEO of SHPE. “SHPE believes the STEM industry’s most pressing problem is that the workforce has yet to reflect the full spectrum of talent in the nation. SHPE is honored in its 50th year to continue to support students and professionals from the Hispanic community who will work to position the U.S. as the top STEM innovator in the world.”
