Green Apple Haircutters is the kind of business that contributes to the hometown atmosphere of South Miami’s Town Center. In operation for over 30 years in the same location at 5806 Sunset Drive, owner and stylist Norma Khoury is the driving force behind the tidy salon’s continued success
“There is something special about South Miami. In the past I have considered other locations, but couldn’t find anything like I have here. I get along well with my fellow merchants, have wonderful clients and get good service from the city,” said Norma.
The shop is inviting, friendly and comfortingly down-to-earth while offering the latest trends in hairdressing. Norma’s blend of excellent technique and her ability to keep up with the newest breakthroughs in hair treatment, coloring and cutting is what keeps her customers coming back.
Patronizing Norma’s shop is a family affair for many of her clients, including members of the Steinberg family. For the Steinberg’s, going to the Green Apple is a tradition. For younger generations of the family it is a rite of passage. The salon is the site of the first haircut for Steinberg children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
“We love Norma. Every time we drive into South Miami, the kids say they want to get their hair cut,” said granddaughter, Gayle Miller.
Alan and Sue Steinberg are regulars at the Green Apple, as was Gertrude Steinberg, Alan’s late mother. Mr. and Mrs. Steinberg are avid birdwatchers and environmentalists involved in many local and national organizations including the Tropical Audubon Society (TAS) located just east of Red Road on Sunset Drive. Mr. Steinberg has assisted the Society for 33 years as an officer of the board. The future Steinberg Nature Center at the TAS is named in honor of the Steinbergs for their generosity as benefactors.
Some members of the Steinberg family have moved away from South Florida, but whenever they are in town, a trip to the salon for a great cut and style is part of their itinerary. And, of course the opportunity to catch up with Norma is another important part of the experience.
“We’ve watched Norma’s children grow up,” said daughter, Laura Froman.
“We have a lot of shared family history,” says Norma, smiling.
Norma Khoury’s chosen profession has a long history stretching back to at least the ancient Egyptians and their penchant for wearing wigs. In today’s world, the treatment of hair is constantly changing as more is understood about which products and practices are best to maintain a healthy head of hair.
Whether a beautician, hairdresser, or stylist, the person entrusted with one’s “crowning glory” has a large role to play in one’s self-image. Norma’s goal is to make certain that her clients leave the salon feeling good about their personal appearance and themselves.
Successful and talented stylists like Norma also understand that the formula for retaining
repeat clients extends beyond their styling techniques and proficiency. It takes a good listener and a large dose of discretion.
“As a stylist, I wear many hats,” said Norma.
