Holiday décor is already popping up around town and we are just weeks away for the real start of the season. In that vein, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade continue to be one of the best places to purchase Christmas trees and wreaths. This 35 year old tradition raise charitable funds with one hundred percent of proceeds from the trees and wreaths sales benefitting the positive programs of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade, an organization that serves 10,000 boys and girls in Miami-Dade County. To kick off the 2012 selling season, Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade will hold a grand opening ribbon cutting ceremony at the tree lot on Monday, Nov. 19. Look for Santa Claus himself at the event that will also include local dignitaries and Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade representatives.
Service organizations are gearing up for the holiday season collecting food for Thanksgiving baskets as well as clothes, food and toys for those in need. South Florida is one of the most generous locations anywhere and holidays certainly make that more evident than ever. The GFWC Coral Gables Woman’s Club will begin the season preparing complete Thanksgiving baskets for the families of the children served by the club’s May Van Sickle Children’s Dental Clinic. More on those activities in the next issue.
In other happenings, renowned photographer Alberto Romeu’s work on display though Nov. 7th at Belen Jesuit Preparatory School, 500 SW 127th Ave., in The Saladrigas Gallery. Entitled the FACES of Cuban Culture, the exhibit ion is dedicated to and features many writers, painters, sculptors, musicians, actors, editors, photographers and curators. On Oct. 18, hundreds gathered at Belen for the opening of the exhibit that also featured live entertainment by Los Armonicos Quitet. Gallery hours are open by appointment. For information, call 786-621-4624. Among the many enjoying the evening were Alberto’s son Ruben Romeu and Ruben’s wife Terry, who is renown for her new Pika Sauce available for sale online. Aside from the many artists whose portraits were on display, the crowd also included board members of the many non profits for which Romeu lends his talent. Among the scene were former Coral Gables Mayor Don and Jeannett Slesnick; Luis Miguel, of Mercantil Commercebank; and Brooke Noble, of Actors Playhouse.
Somerset Gables Academy, a community school located in the heart of Coral Gables, is hosting the 1st Annual Somerset Gables Golf Tournament to benefit the construction of a new playground. The event will be held at The Biltmore Hotel on Friday, November 2, 2012. The tournament features a scramble format and shotgun start at 12:30 pm, registration begins at 10:30 am. The GFWC Cocoplum Woman’s Club will hold a Fashion Show featuring Olian in Coral Gables will benefit Big Brothers and Big Sisters on Wed., Nov. 7, at 11 a.m. , at their clubhouse 1375 Suset Drive.
