Process and Procedures
A scholarship committee, known as the Marshall Williamson Committee (Committee), is hereby formed and organized as follows:
(1) The Committee is comprised of five members who are to be appointed in accordance with the City Charter. One member must be a teacher/professor, one member must be a skilled tradesperson, one member must be a business owner, and two members must be City of South Miami residents. The City Commission may waive the qualifications of a member of the Committee upon the request of a member of the City Commission who has not made a Committee appointment.
(2) Each member will serve for a 2-year term.
(3) The quorum for meetings is a majority of the members who have been appointed
(4) The duty of the Committees is to select a recipient(s).
(5) The Committee must present the name(s) of the recipient(s) to the City Commission at the next regularly scheduled City Commission meeting after each selection(s) has(have) been made.
(6) The Community Outreach Coordinator or other City employee chosen by the City Manager will act as liaison.
The Marshall Williamson Committee reserves the right to select more than one recipient with the total available funding to be shared amongst the selected recipients.
Recipients will be selected from residents of City of South Miami who are high school seniors, college students, and people wanting to attend vocational/trade schools.
Preference will be given to applicants from disadvantaged economic backgrounds.
Applicants who are current students must have at minimum grade point average of 2.5.
Scholarship funding may be utilized by selected awardees for tuition assistance and related books/supplies for either accredited vocational or accredited advanced academic education.
History: Upon delivering his/her application the applicant will be handed information about Mr. Marshall Williamson.
Interview: Each of the most promising applicants will be invited to participate in an interview with the committee. During this interview, at least one topic will be the student’s understanding of Mr. Marshall Williamson area history.
Office: The office of the Community Outreach Coordinator serves as the Office for the Marshall Williamson Scholarship materials and records.
Notice: Notices of the Scholarship will be posted on the City Website, in the SoMi INSIDER, on the bulletin board in the Community Center lobby, and on the City’s various social media websites.
The application packet may be downloaded from the City’s website, http://www.southmiamifl.gov/.
It may be picked up at the Community Center Reception Desk, 5800 SW 66th St, or It may be picked up between 9 am and 4 pm at Suite 4, 5825 SW 68 St., South Miami, FL 33143.
To be considered for funding, a fully completed application with all required documentation must be received by the application deadline.
The deadline for receiving 2021-2022 scholarship application is 5:00 pm on Wednesday, June 30, 2021.
The recipients will be announced at the Commission Meeting on August 17, 2021.
Checks will be made out to the institution for the use of the student throughout the academic term.
These procedures are in place for the 2021-2022 academic year. They may be amended for future years.
