South Miami Rotarians have found a new home for their weekly Tuesday lunch meetings at the CG/ South Miami Elks Lodge. Now that Carrabba’s is opened for lunch, the noise factor forced a change of venue according to South Miami Rotarian John Sorgie. As it happens, South Miami is not the only club to change venues. Starting July 11, the Coral Gables Rotarians will begin holding their weekly Thursday meetings at the Marriott Courtyard on Navarre and Le Jeune Rd. Rotarians should keep these changes in mind when looking to visit another club or participate in a make-up meeting.
On another topic altogether, Shake-A-Leg Miami enlisted ongoing support from Bacardi USA to hold an appreciation party for donors at their Coconut Grove facility on June 19. The crowd of generous supporters joined Harry Horgan for drinks and a lovely buffet during the affair on the second floor terrace of the SAL building overlooking the Bay. Among those mingling that evening were several Coral Gables Rotarians including Walter Alvarez, Rodney Langer, Bill Quesenberry, Wiley Hicks, and this writer on hand to present a check from the proceeds of a recent fundraiser that was matched to bring the amount up to approximately $4,000 that will be further matched by the Batchelor Foundation. Also, in the mix making a separate donation from the Woody Foundation was Gables Rotarian Bill Beckham. Shake- A-Leg provides an incredible resource with its programs that teach sailing and swimming throughout the year with a special programs focused on the disabled and disadvantaged populations.
Gables Rotary Community Service Chair, Deena Bell Llewellyn, provided members and guests with a presentation on June 20 as the featured speaker at the Club’s weekly meeting for one of the last meetings to be held at the Coral Gables Country Club before they move location to the Marriott on July 11. During Bell’s video presentation, she shared Rotarians at work doing everything from coastal clean-up, serving meals at Camillus House, monthly bingo at the VA Hospital, and selling drinks at St. Pats Day to international outreach projects. That committee wrapped up year of community service with a committee gathering at the home of outgoing President Walter Alvarez and his wife, Annette, on June 22. Cover dishes provided lots of hot and spices food for all. Among the many guests were Heather and John O’Meara, Andrea Stone, Carlos and Terri Bolado, and Charles Llewellyn, to mention a few.
On the Chamber front, the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce is teaming up with the Miami-Dade Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce for a midsummer night screening at Coral Gables Art Cinema, 260 Aragon Avenue, on Thursday, July 18, 6 p.m. The screening will feature famed director Pedro Almodóvar’s hysterical new comedy I’m So Excited (Los amantes pasejeros). Tickets are $25 for Chamber members and $30 for non members. Among the cast are some of Spanish-language cinema’s most renowned actors- including Antonio Banderas, Penélope Cruz, Javier Cámara, Cecilia Roth and Paz Vega, to mention a few. After the show, La Taberna Giralda, one block over at 254 Giralda Avenue, will be offering 2 for 1 drinks to finished off a fun filled evening of laughter and good times.
