South Miami Rotarians have a new meeting location and welcome visiting Rotarians to join them on Tuesdays, 12:15 p.m., at Chamber South, 6410 SW 80th St. South Miami Rotary Club is well known for its annual art festival in February, for school dictionary giveaways and numerous other community outreach efforts. Those interested in “Service Above Self” , Rotary’s motto, and wanting more information on this organization should visit www.facebook/rotaryclubofsouthmiami. Rotary luncheons provide guests with great programs. In fact, Club President Brett Trembley recently welcomed as a guest speaker Jeff Bartel, President of the Orange Bowl Committee, always a great treat.
Coral Gables Rotarians, Coral Gables Woman’s Club and even the Westin Colonnade are among the many designing entries for The Great Grove Bed Race to be held on Nov. 3rd. Rotary Club of Coral Gables bed will be sponsored by Shell Lumber while the Woman’s Club float is a Community Newspapers entry. Jesus Guzman, Shell Lumber President, was recently welcomed as a new member of the Gables Rotary Club and has volunteered is location for the construction of those two non profit entries. Speaking of Rotary, several local Rotarians were spotted at Hammock’s Park for the Coastal Clean Day. They waded through water and even used kayaks to gathered as much debris as they could before calling it a day and taking a well deserved rest at Scottie’s Landing.
Gables Bike Day Launch party was held October 1st at Tarpon Bend. The affair served as a fundraiser with some terrific silent auction items and drew a nice crowd of supporters. Scheduled for October 20, this 3rd annual event promotes a safe and friendly environment for cyclists and pedestrians by advocating programs and events to educate the community. This year’s event promises to be more fun than ever as Miracle Mile will be closed for traffic and opened to walkers and bicyclists. Among the many enjoying the evening were John and Deborah Swain, Don Slesnick, Yolanda Woodbridge, Nicolas and Jodi Cabrera, Charles Sachs, Michael McMahon, and Carolina Rendeiro, to mention a few.
Finally, the Sandy B. Muller Breast Cancer Foundation’s Sandy Muller recently visited the Coral Gables Woman’s Club. Sandy, a breast cancer survivor, shared her story and her incentive to found a non profit with her co-founders, Linda Marracini, MD, and Beverly Sage. The Club was certainly moved by her outreach to help patients undergoing treatment with living expenses. In a very short time, they have already assisted 200 women. After her presentation, the Club presented her with a donation to support her efforts.
