South Miami Rotarians are looking to have a busy summer. South Miami Rotary President-Elect Gabriel DeArmas, of Home Instead Senior Care, is planning the Club’s upcoming installation dinner on June 14th at the Peacock Café in Coconut Grove. The South Miami Club will also join forces with Key Biscayne Rotary for a beach clean-up and softball game on July 12th, at 3:30 p.m. Rotarians certainly know how to make volunteering fun even when it is a messy job.
On the meeting front, South Miami Rotary President, Brett Trembly,welcomes visiting Rotarians to visit their club on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of every month at Chamber South.
Good speakers are always key and, most recently, club member Lewis Feldman called on Fernando Figueredo, Ph.D., the Director of Career Services Office at FIU, to be the guest speaker on May 13. As a former Rotarian and a Paul Harris Fellow, Figueredo was delighted to be invited to address the club, which happens to be the first time he has been a guest speaker for a Rotary Club since he took the position with FIU. During his presentation, he explained the importance that finding jobs for students post graduation has on university funding noting that having students with internship experience facilitates placing them in a job post graduation. FIU looks to continue is expansion and expects to have 60,000 students by the year 2020. FIU has had a meteoric rise in academia as one of it colleges after another moves up in ranking despite the bias for older institutions. He noted that FIU graduates are getting an education egual to or better than any university in the country, private or public. and he encouraged the business community to support FIU students by offering internships which can be a critical part of their resumes as they enter the workforce.
In other Rotary related news, on May 13th, District 6990 Rotarians gathered at the Seaview on Miami Beach for a social and then many of them moved on The Orchid House on S. Beach for a fundraiser organized by the Brickell Rotary Club to benefit their charitable outreach efforts.
Also on the charitable front, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® celebrated its 12th annual FedEx/St. Jude Angels & Stars Gala on May 17, at the JW Marriott Marquis Miami and honored renowned Chef Adrianne Calvo. Calvo, a break out chef from South Florida, has made it her mission to help children fighting cancer and is a long time supporter of St. Jude.
More than 700 guests attended the affair for one of the world’s premier centers for the research and treatment of pediatric cancer and other deadly diseases. Guests enjoyed performances by recording artists, Willy Chirino and Jencarlos Canela. The gala also helped promote awareness for the research done at St. Jude not just to help children fighting cancer in the U.S., but also Latin American and 19 other countries .
