[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Better Families Through Tae Kwon Do Martial Arts School came from humble beginnings, with its director and founder, Mary Beth Klock-Perez, starting off in her own right as student under the “Father of American Tae Kwon Do” Grand Master Jhoon Rhee.

Since its creation in 1988, Better Families strives to live up to their positive message and adherence to their motto: “People do not care how much you know; until they know how much you care.”

Their longstanding recognition in the communities of Miami, Coral Gables, Coconut Grove, Kendall and Pinecrest comes with a student base that includes children, teens, and adults from ages 3-79. Their students benefit from not only acting as a class but as a community that celebrates all of its members’ progress. As such, achievements and propagation of positive self-belief are key components of their programs.

Unlike other martial arts institutions, Better Families focuses on the student as a person rather than just a pupil of the discipline, using the Jhoon Rhee system of Tae Kwon Do to instill proper behavior inside and outside of the dojang. This also delves into school life, with instructors often requesting paperwork from schools or even requiring honor roll confirmation before a student can achieve the rank of black belt.

Teens and Adults can benefit from the program as well, gaining patience, self-tolerance and self- discipline in their personal lives from their experiences. Instead of perfectionism, adults learn to have fun with their training amongst their younger peers, and teens learn to value the structures of authority that can lead them to better paths in the future.

Better-Families-TKDOutside of Better Families, Master Klock-Perez and Grand Master Perez have showcased their martial arts skills to the media. This can be seen by their various appearances in television and films. Both can be recognized from their appearances on Sabado Gigante and Despierta America, where they have performed different branches of their prowess from self-defense to martial arts ballet. They have also performed for troops stationed in South Korea at their USO showcase.

“Along with countless awards for their services to the community and industry, several of the staff members have made television appearances to showcase their martial arts talent.” – Master Mary Beth Klock-Perez

With their staff coming on their own as masters of their respective disciplines, Better Families students, both former and current have had their fair share of achievements. They formed a number of members of Team USA alongside Grand Master Perez in the World Games Martial Arts division, bringing home 23 medals, 17 of which were gold.

From there, you can understand the sense of pride and willingness to teach that comes from this Martial Arts school and its staff. But don’t take it from me, there is more information on their programs and how you can join Better Families on their website: <http://www.betterfamilies.com/> or contact them at: (305) 661- 1882.
