Speaking of the Elks, Rotarians will be gathering at that Lodge on June 30 for their annual Installation Banquet. South Miami Rotary Club President and former South Miami Mayor Horace Feliu will turn over the gavel to incoming president Karyn Vassell, of Baptist Health in Kendall. For Feliu it has been a very rewarding year and he expressed extreme pride in the Club’s many hands-on volunteer efforts including the Club’s annual dictionary donations to area hundreds of school children. As Vassell takes over, the Club will celebrate with a party theme to match Rotary’s theme for the new year, “ Peace through Service”. President-Elect Vassell is encouraging everyone to come to the Installation attired in 60’s outfits with peace symbols and other appropriate regalia. Look for more on that event in an upcoming issue.
Golfers may still have time to sign up for the Baptist Health South Florida’s 21st Annual Military Affairs “Stars & Stripes” Golf Tournament on June 14, Flag Dag, at the Miccosukee Golf and Country Club, 6401 Kendale Lakes Drive. Chamber South and the Military Affairs Committee have partnered to host this event that benefits a number of programs that support our local military including The Armed Forces Service Center Lounge at Miami International Airport, the Wings Over Homestead Air Show, the annual Junior ROTC Pass-In-Review, and the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation. Participants will not only have a great day of golf but also have a chance to win some great prizes. With children out of school, there is fun awaiting youngsters at Zoo Miami. The Zoo has just opened its new $1 million state-of-theart playground that promises to keep away the summer heat. The Playworld Playground contains two play areas, Jungle Journey and Ocean Voyage that spans 1.5 acres with play and picnic space for children 12 years and under .
