Miami’s series was impacted by a controversial seventh-inning call that altered the game’s course. As Miami players were exiting the field following a bases-loaded threat, the third-base umpire called a balk on pitcher Ryan Bilka. This decision nullified the out and allowed the go-ahead run to score, significantly changing the momentum of the game.
Miami took an early lead in the first inning when Derek Williams hit his fifth home run of the season with two men on base. The three-run lead was short-lived, as the Gators responded in the second inning, sending eight batters to the plate and scoring four runs. Rob Evans, after a very efficient first inning in which he struck out two of the three batters faced, struggled to open the second by giving up three straight singles to load the bases. Evans managed a third strikeout before surrendering the fourth single of the inning, which scored the Gators’ first run. Two batters later, the Gators doubled, driving in two more runs and giving Florida a 4-3 lead.
After a disruptive second inning, Rob settled in, overpowering the Gator batters with seven consecutive strikeouts and preventing a single runner from reaching base through the sixth. Miami, which had started explosively, became quiet at the plate, recording no hits and only reaching base in the second on a hit batter. In the third, a walk and a second hit batter did not produce any runs. The Hurricanes finally broke through in the fifth inning, when Michael Torres hit a one-out double, igniting the offense. A wild pitch moved Michael to third, and a shallow flyout to center by Daniel allowed Michael to tag up and slide in safely under the tag, tying the game at four.
Rob seemed to be tiring in the seventh inning, hitting a batter and walking the next, which led to a pitching change at the 104th pitch. JD promptly called on the team’s closer, Ryan Bilka. A seven-pitch walk loaded the bases with no outs. Two consecutive strikeouts followed, and it looked like the Canes had escaped disaster when Michael made what everyone believed was the final out on the warning track in center field. However, the celebration was cut short when the third-base umpire waved off the out, ruling that Ryan had balked by not being set before the pitch. JD stormed out of the dugout in disbelief, but did not win the argument. As the team returned to the field, new life for the Gators emerged, with the tie-breaker trotting home.
After the third-base umpire’s frustrating call, Miami was unable to regroup, striking out four times and drawing only two walks and a single for the rest of the game. To secure the victory, the Gators added three runs in the ninth inning, capped by a three-run homer, and took the series with an 8-4 score.
Offensively, the bats were quiet for the second night, recording just 6 hits with only two players contributing multiple hits: Michael Torres went 2-3 with a double, and Derek Williams went 2-4 with a home run. The team struck out 12 times, maintaining a low batting average of .182. With runners in scoring position, they went 1-5. Facing a quality opponent, the Canes have yet to demonstrate the ability to hit top-tier pitching.
Rob Evans was exceptional on the mound, aside from the second inning. He recorded twelve strikeouts and retired the Gators in order in five of the six innings he pitched. Conversely, Ryan Bilka has yet to demonstrate his ability to close effectively. Throwing 51 pitches over 2.1 innings seems excessive for a closer. After surrendering a three-run homer in the ninth, JD had to bring in Lazaro Collera to secure the final two outs.
Tate DeRias is scheduled to pitch for tomorrow’s 1PM start with one key instruction: avoid the SWEEP. That is a demanding call, given his difficulties this season. JD will need to keep him on a short leash if we intend to take one game in the series against a Gator team that has been a thorn in our side forever.
