Get back to basics at Ed’s Boot Camp

By Nancy Eagleton….

At Ed’s Boot Camp, clients take training very seriously.

At Ed’s Boot Camp, no class is ever the same and workouts are tailored to meet various fitness levels, from beginners to advanced. Ed’s Boot Camp sessions are offered at in the mornings and evenings at locations in South Miami, Coral Gables, Kendall, Palmetto Bay, Coconut Grove and Doral, making them convenient for busy executives and work-at-home moms alike.

Ed Delatorre of Ed’s Boot Camp describes his classes as “tweaked versions of the good ole’ fashion middle school phys ed classes.” The trainers blend “back to basics” calisthenics, stair work, plyometrics, core work, stretching, agility and speed drills with modern-day Pilates, kick boxing and yoga.

“Our boot camp classes are great for those who are bored with the same fitness routine,” said Delatorre. “They are good for the newbie who hasn’t exercised in long time and they work well for athletes who want to cross-train.”

Delatorre continued, “We tailor the exercises for each individual and never leave anyone behind. We focus on the individual during the classes, even though it is a group class. It’s just one aspect that sets us apart from other boot camps.”

Delatorre employs 12 to 15 instructors who all have various fitness training certifications. Some have physical therapy degrees or sports medicine experience and others were Navy Seals or college athletes.

“Despite their backgrounds or education, before teaching, all instructors must pass an intensive 160-hour certification course under my supervision,” said Delatorre.

The team meets daily to share ideas and review client evaluation surveys, which are conducted on a regular basis. The trainers rotate to the six different boot camp locations in order to provide clients with training variety. All equipment needed for the classes, such as free weights and resistance bands, is provided.

Deborah Davis, a school teacher at Howard Drive Elementary, has been attending Ed’s Boot Camp for seven years. She and several other teachers from her school frequent the camp held at Coral Reef Park in Palmetto Bay.

“The trainers rotate to different locations each day, so no class is ever the same,” said Davis, who attends four to five classes each week. “The trainers challenge and motivate you in different ways during each class.”

Delatorre started Ed’s Boot Camp in South Miami in 1988 and the Bethel Gibson Community Center on SW 66 Street continues to serve as the flagship location. The fitness center at the Community Center has a fully equipped gym and features cardio machines, weight machines, free weights, lockers and showers.

Delatorre said this fitness center is perfect for the person who would like to join the gym and expand their fitness routine. He offers customized personal training sessions, as well as a 30-minute Express Program at this facility.

“Personal training is perfect for someone who may be apprehensive about the boot camp’s intensity,” said Delatorre. “Many people choose to train one-on-one for six to eight weeks in a customized program that will help them improve their fitness level and achieve desired results.”

Delatorre, who was born in Miami, was in the U.S. Marines and received a bachelor’s degree in nursing. He was introduced to weight training by his middle school football and track and field coaches, and since that time, it’s always been a part of his life.

“After high school, I consistently had people asking me to help train them,” said Delatorre. “The boot camps were a natural progression from these personal training sessions.”

At Ed’s Boot Camp, there are never any contracts or registration fees. For $99 per month, you can attend unlimited classes at any of the six locations. Day passes are $15 per class.

Ed’s Boot Camps are offered at the Bethel Gibson Community Center and Murray Park, serving South Miami and Coral Gables, Coral Reef Park in Palmetto Bay, Kendall Soccer Park in Kendall, Kennedy Park in Coconut Grove and Doral Meadows Park in Doral.
