SM Commission for Women seeks board members

By Donna Shelley….
The City of South Miami’s Commission for Women has three open board member positions and is currently seeking volunteers to join the board. Residents or those who have been employed in the city for two or more years are encouraged to submit their names for consideration. Board forms are available online at the city’s website. Appointments are determined by the City Commission.

The Commission for Women acts as an advisory board for the mayor on women’s issues and supports efforts for economic, political and social equality for women and girls. The Commission was established by city ordinance in 1997.

Recently, the organization held a verysuccessful High Tea as a fundraiser for its scholarship program. Hailed as a model of fellowship by those in attendance, the event raised $500 for Shanequa R. Smith, of South Miami, who is attending Bethune-Cookman College.

The Commission has other programs, initiatives and events in the planning stages. Those interested in the welfare, health, education and equal treatment of women and girls are invited to attend meetings, participate in fundraising efforts, volunteer and join the board.

Meetings are held once per month and the meeting calendar with dates and times is listed on the city’s website.
