Then, from 4:30-7:30pm, the general public is invited to enjoy the FSFM Jazz and Jeans Band with Larry Keating joining the group as well as our student musicians who will sit-in and experience a live band performance opportunity.
Friends of South Florida Music, a non-profit foundation, currently provides free weekly music classes to over 850 children in low income communities of South Florida. In Miami-Dade, children typically do not receive music instruction during school until the second grade. In particular, youth and families in the south regions of Miami-Dade County have little access to music instruction outside of the school day due to a lack of equity in the distribution of music education programming in our county. As a result, music is not readily available for all young children and opportunities for inclusion are only open to parents who can afford supplemental enrichment outside of the school day. In addition, children with disabilities are disproportionately affected by a lack of access to music education because they may be pulled from enrichment activities for additional needed therapies. Concurrently, their families often do not have funds for supplemental music experiences due to the therapy expenses. Our program provides high quality, music education to children of all abilities. Through participation, research suggests our programming can provide positive effects on students’ gross and fine motor skills, language acquisition, self-help skills, cognitive development all while promoting positive mental health.
Event Tickets for the 2:00-4:00pm are $150.00 per person. info@friendsofsfm.org or call 305-484-3658 to purchase your seat. All funding will be used to provide free weekly year round programming to over 1,000 children between August 1, 2022 – July 31, 2023 in low income communities of South Florida.
