The 2009-10 South Miami Art Night concludes this Friday, May 14. From 6 to 9, SOMI Artwalk© invites you to visit over 15 businesses who are exhibiting local artists. Stroll around town, enjoy jazz at the Art Night Headquarters located at 5750 Sunset Drive; and after, dine at our area restaurants.
Held on the second Friday of the month from October through May, Art Night South Miami offers the opportunity to appreciate art while appreciating the uniqueness of the shops in our town center. Retail businesses from US1 & Sunset to the east side of Red Road provide a delightful way to experience art night and enjoy our hometown.
Among the featured artists in this concluding month is an exhibition of students from The Young Men’s Academy for Academic & Civic Development at MacArthur South. Several students will be exhibiting their work at The Wirtz Gallery, located in the lobby at the First National Bank of South Miami. Framed original art by these students may be purchased for $85. The Academy is an alternative school for students who are unsuccessful in the traditional classroom. Called “Pupil’s Perceptions” the program is an arts-based, service-learning program that engages these students in creative learning experiences that are shared to fulfill the needs of the community. As a result of these rich activities, both the community and students benefit.
Another highlight of this concluding art night evening will be an exhibition by photographer Tom Smith at the Audubon House on the east side of Red Road. Tom Smith is the founder of Wine News and a former UM and Miami Dolphins running back. He has been capturing the textural, the unusual, and the compelling through the camera lens since 1970. His photographic work regularly takes him to the Everglades and Biscayne Bay national parks.
