Sports Grill thriving in new South Miami location

By Jose Cassola….
The 25-year-old franchise whose chicken wings were voted best in Miami by the New Times recently opened a fourth location in South Miami.

Owner and founder Eric Haas says “We are a family-oriented and neighborhood type of business, one that draws a lot of foot traffic and serves the type of food you cannot get anywhere else.”

Christine Marques, a managing partner for the 4,700-square foot restaurant said the newest location is following in the footsteps of its three other predecessors as it has exceeded sales goals and customer traffic in just one month of operation.

“The response has been fantastic. We are exceeding expectations and have established regulars quickly, which is nice,” Marques said. “Having lived in the neighborhood for years and knowing what this community needed, I absolutely knew that would be the case. People in South Miami who know us and clearly have a love for Sports Grill are thrilled we are here. We couldn’t be happier.”

Jose Leon, 24, who lives and works in South Miami, said he is happy Sports Grill moved into his neighborhood.

“I’m glad they’re branching out to other communities, I used to enjoy going to the Sunset Sports Grill for lunch and happy hour. It’s always been a fun place to eat and drink beer with friends and co-workers. Now, I can continue having that experience in a much more convenient location” said Leon, whose law firm is located across the street.

Marques said Sports Grill draws a large sports fan base. Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays have especially been busy lately, she said, because of football season.

“It’s a good time to be opening,” Marques said. “My goal is to help grow the brand and move Sports Grill forward. Our strategy will be to continue to go into neighborhoods that make sense.”

Both Haas and Marques said Sports Grill’s goal is to continue expanding in potentially profitable locations.

“We might be looking next to open in Doral and Miami Lakes or maybe branch out to Broward and Palm Beach Counties,” Marques said.

Some of Sports Grill’s unique dishes include: a half-order of waffle fries for $4.29, smoked fish spread and nachos served with tomatoes and jalapeños for $4.79; garlic mushrooms served with ranch dressing for $4.49; and grilled Jamaican jerk marinated chicken breast served on a Caeser salad for $7.79. Baby back ribs are also available and their famous wings ranging from BBQ, grilled and buffalo style to garlic and glazed teriyaki. They also have a large kids menu and wraps and salads. Happy hour is from 4-7 p.m Monday through Friday; 2 for 1 well drinks and reduced priced beer.

Amberbock pitchers are $9.75 on Monday nights, County Employees Hospitality Beer Night is on Tuesdays starting at 7 p.m. and Ladies Night is on Wednesdays.
