South Miami children celebrated Earth Day through art, gardeners swapped seedlings, and local musicians played, adding rhythm to the weekly market.
Students from David Fairchild Elementary School and Ludlam Elementary School displayed earth-inspired art at the South Miami Farmers’ Market on Saturday April 23. The students were awarded prizes: both schools received computers donated by the Farmers’ Market Committee and the 4th grade at Ludlam Elementary won a pizza party sponsored by South Miami Hospital, for having the most student participation. The Earth Day celebration was put on by Earth Learning, a notfor- profit organization and the South Miami Farmers’ Market Committee to highlight community efforts toward more sustainable living.
Earth Day also the apropos time to launch a grass-roots effort to work toward making South Miami a “Bike-Friendly City.” Petitions were on hand for market visitors to sign.
South Miami Farmers’ Market is held each Saturday of the year from 9a – 2p and is located beneath the South Miami Town Center Clock Tower at City Hall.
