South Miami is a relatively small city in Miami-Dade County, with a size of about 2.3 square miles. Even so, there’s plenty to do in this bustling area, especially considering the nearby cities and excellent public transportation system via Metrobus and the Miami Metrorail. South Miami can be a tremendous place to
spend a day for visitors that know where to go.

An obvious choice for a day in South Miami would be to stop by the Shops at Sunset Palace, a great
outdoor mall that features an eclectic blend of stores ranging from Z Gallerie to a Splitsville bowling lane.
There’s plenty to do and see at Sunset Palace, with bars for adults and special stores for kids. Sunset
Palace is a huge tourist destination in South Miami, but it avoids an overly commercial feel by offering some truly unique stores and services. It’s an essential stop for all visitors, and it’s easy to spend an entire day at Sunset Palace.

Fans of gardening and botany will appreciate Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden in nearby Coral
Gables, which houses some tremendous examples of Florida’s unique plant life as well as flowers and plants from all over the world. It’s a great place to take a slow walk and only a few miles from South Miami. The Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden offers a very unique experience at a fair price.

Back inside of South Miami, there are a few great parks that definitely deserve a mention. If you’re a fan of handball, you’ll be pleased to know that South Miami has courts at Brewer Park and Dante Fascell Park. Basketball courts are at South Miami Park and Brewer Park, with lighted courts at Murray Park for those games that start in the afternoon and extend into the evening. Tennis fans should definitely stop by the aforementioned Dante Fascell Park, as it has six well-maintained tennis courts.

Art lovers can head to Miami Art Central, which is located in Miami proper very close to South Miami’s city limits, or make a slightly longer trek to the Lowe Art Museum at the University of Miami. Either of these locations offers some great artwork and a good cultural experience to break up days of the great outdoors, shopping and beaches near the town.
