Today’s scrimmage was an unexpected kickoff to our opening-day preparations. Thanks to earlier weather conditions, the field wasn’t safe for everyone to play—only the pitcher, catcher, and batter could take the field. The scoreboard took on a unique role, displaying the balls and strikes for us.
Considering it was our first scrimmage of the season, our expectations for the hitters were modest as they were still shaking off the rust. We tallied 12 hits in total, including four extra-base hits by Alex Sosa, Bennett Gary, Jackson Hugus, and Brandon DeGoti. However, the strikeout count rose to 14, highlighting an area for improvement.
Our pitching showed improved control, especially from Michael Fernandez and Eric Peralta, who had struggled with accuracy in the fall. While overall performance was mixed, there are clear signs of progress as we move forward. Jake Dorn had the most notable outing, striking out four of the seven batters he faced. Since each pitcher only threw two innings without fielding, it’s difficult to fully assess today’s pitching. The hitting looked promising only once, in the seventh inning, when Brandon DeGoti and Jackson Hugus hit back-to-back doubles off Jack Durso.
Tomorrow will be the final unofficial scrimmage, starting at 3 PM. If attending, definitely bring something warm. It was cold and windy in the stands. Preparation goes into high gear next week with the coaches joining the festivities. Will keep you posted as to time and date.
