Beach Clean-up-time!

Beach Clean-up-time!

Beach Clean-up-time!On September 21st we had our 4th Annual Miami-Dade Coastal Clean-Up. This is an international event, held all over our coastlines, parks and other areas on this day. The United States Coast Guard and the Coast Guard Auxiliary not only coordinated the event for Sunny Isles Beach, but also were part of the cleaning efforts. We had a great turn out with four teachers and approximately 25 students from our Sunny Isles Beach Norman S. Edelcup K-8 School. There were other volunteers from the local communities and some Coast Guard officers as well.

The City of Sunny Isles Beach generally has a very clean, well maintained and groomed beach; however events like this annual coastal cleanup are always welcome and needed. On September 21, the volunteers separated in groups with trash grabbers and bags in hand, picking up all different types of debris and garbage. The cleanup was on a perfect day with amazing weather which made it great for this event. The Sunny Isles Beach Ocean Rescue (SIBOR) Division helped out by providing water, supplies and a lifeguard on standby to help with any needs.

Mr. Cohen of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary, who coordinated this event, attributed the success of the cleanup to the enthusiastic help provided by the SIBOR Division of the SIB Police Department. Everyone expressed what a great feeling it was to be a part of keeping our coastline in shape. As illustrated in the chart, the volunteers also counted and documented types of trash picked up. You can see the comparison of the statistics from last year to this year on the chart accompanying this article.

The City of Sunny Isles Beach and the SIB Ocean Rescue Division of the SIB Police Department thanks the volunteers from all agencies and especially the Norman S. Edelcup/Sunny Isles Beach K-8 students and teachers, for this huge effort. Our resident birds, marine life and our beachgoers can safely enjoy our clean beach.
