June 14th, 2012 was a day that will go down as unforgettable in the annals of The Great City of Sunny Isles Beach. It was a living history of the background of the formation of our Great City of Sunny Isles Beach and was presented by the people who were there at the start of it all at the Norman S. Edelcup SIB K-8 School. This historic event brought together over 100 citizens of our city.
The afternoon started out with a welcome address by Dennis Stubbolo, Chairman of the Senior Action Committee, followed by the Presentation of Colors by the Sunny Isles Beach Police Honor Guard. Then our great city had the honor and privilege of having State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance. This was followed by the Invocation and Acknowledgement of Flag Day by SIB City Historian Richard C. Schulman.
City Manager, Alan J. Cohen, introduced over 30 dignitaries and special guests of the day, who where in the audience to attend this very special occasion, during the celebration of the City’s 15th Anniversary. Immediately following, Director of Cultural & Community Services, Susan Simpson, joined Alan Cohen to introduce the program.
The highlight of the show was the program speakers. The story of how our city was formed, told by the actual individuals, who created the City of Sunny Isles Beach. Our special guest speakers included the following: our present Mayor Norman S. Edelcup, who was one of the Founding Fathers of Sunny Isles Beach; Susan Fried, City Incorporation Advocate; State Senator Gwen Margolis, who at the time of the City’s incorporation, was Chair of the Miami-Dade County Commission; Commissioner Roslyn Brezin: one of the original Members of the Sunny Isles Beach Charter Commission; and finally, Commissioner Danny Iglesias who was a Member of the 1st City Commission and one of the Founding Fathers of Sunny Isles Beach. The audience listened intently as each speaker related their part and the many steps involved resulting in the beautiful City of Sunny Isles Beach that we enjoy today.
Miami-Dade County Commissioner Sally Heyman presented Mayor Norman S. Edelcup with a Special Proclamation from the Miami Dade County Commission.
We then had a question and answer session with the program speakers about the history of our City which was absolutely fantastic. In closing, the Senior Action Committee (along with Cary Martinez, Events Specialist, and Alayne
