Once again Sunny Isles Beach Junior lifeguard camp had a fun, action-packed season. Camp was offered at two levels. Regular camp designed for beginner and intermediate swimmers was held for two, 2-week sessions. The Elite Squad session, also two weeks long, was offered to stronger swimmers and acceptance into the camp was based on a swimming test. Both levels of camp were loaded with activities designed to teach campers what it takes to be an Ocean Rescue Lifeguard.
The campers started out every day with morning stretches and workouts. Being a junior lifeguard is really fun but we also like to teach the importance and seriousness of the job. The camp kids learned the same skills we would use as real lifeguards including Rescue Board training, Buoy Rescues and everything from patron surveillance to learning about daily hazards that could be encountered on the beach.
The Junior Lifeguard participants leave this program with a new respect for the ocean and a confidence about themselves. Another big part of the camp is helping them understand that for Ocean Rescue Lifeguards, it’s extremely important to be a team player. Their teamwork skills were developed and applied by way of various training scenarios in the camp. Examples of team building activities were: relay races, swimming competitions and other competitions on land, all the while sticking together as a team. Certainly a lot of new friendships were formed.
The Junior Lifeguards went on weekly field trips away from the ocean and it’s a good feeling to hear them say- they want to get back on the beach, and get in the water. True lifeguards for life! We are surrounded by water and this experience could be that extra boost in their confidence that may one day payoff and help someone in need.
