LAURA COLVILL Confidential Service with a Smile

Every manager’s dream is having an employee who “knows the ropes”, completes their daily tasks quietly, and maintains a cheerful disposition, all while functioning with complete competence. Laura Colvill, the Human Resources Generalist for the City of Sunny Isles Beach, is such a person. She must also maintain the highest degree of confidentiality and trust, which of course, she does! Her supervisor, Human Resources & Risk Management Director Yael Londoño says, “Laura is such a pleasure to work with. She is reliable and always willing to help! She is a great asset to the HR Department.”

Laura grew up in Maryland where she enjoyed touring the many historic landmarks and visiting museums in Maryland, Virginia and Washington D.C. She attended Prince Georges College in Maryland as an English major. She has lived in Florida for more than 30 years and attended Florida International University (FIU) earning a Certificate in Human Resource Management and Supervision. She also holds a Certificate in Human Resource Management from Barry University.

Her career began in the banking industry, also in the Human Resources section. She found it “gratifying to take an active role in assisting employees.” Along the way she also earned the following certifications: Professional in Human Resources (PHR) and Society of Human Resource Management Certified Professional (SHRM-CP), both certificates globally recognized in the human resource field. She is currently studying for the International Public Management Association for Human Resources (IPMACP) certification, continuing her education and staying current in her field.

She made the career move to the government sector coming to work at the City of Sunny Isle Beach in July 2012. At first she was a temporary employee, assisting with special projects. After about a year the position of Human Resources Generalist was open and she applied for and got the job! As with her previous experience in the private sector, her favorite part of the job is, “Being there for the employees, and personally taking an interest in their well-being, and then being told how much they appreciate my help.”

Laura is a member of the Society of Human Resource Management and the Human Resource Association of Broward County. Laura says of her current position, “As a small department, responsible for over 275 employees, we work together proficiently and effectively – and have fun at the same time.” In her spare time she likes to experiment with recipes, collecting the good ones. She also has a new passion, fitness. She works out faithfully at the gym and has had some amazing results! Laura is a person who may be described as being as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside.
