Saturday, January 21, 2012 was a special day for the young scientists at Norman S. Edelcup Sunny Isles Beach K-8. Our school’s Elementary and Middle School Science Fair winners competed in the South Florida Regional Science and Engineering Fair and our SECME students competed in the annual Olympiad competitions and the results were fabulous!
Ms. Haydee Aguilar, Elementary Science Chairperson, was delighted to report that the students impressed the judges with their projects and were rewarded with medals.
Luke Favata, a 4th Grade student in Mrs. Disla’s class, and Jessica Gonzalez, a 5th Grade student in Ms. Morosco’s Class, won gold medals and Shayaan Subzwari, a 5th Grade student in Mrs. Morosco’s Class won a silver medal. The students and their parents were able to view all the exhibits and experience the excitement of competing at this level. Mr. Goodfriend, 7th Grade science teacher, was also thrilled to report that after what for most was 11 straight hours at Miami-Dade College, our 5 middle school students came home with 7 awards. Congratulations to Bianca Pardo – 6th Grade – Honorable Mention; Gabriel Hernandez – 6th Grade – Excellence; Sumera Subzwari – 7th Grade – Excellence; Katelyn Pacheco – 8th Grade – Superior and Daniel Rub 7th Grade – Superior. In addition to earning a Superior rating, Daniel Rub was selected to represent the District at the State Science Fair! He was also one of only 3 middle-school students selected by the Miami Museum of Science to represent the best of science education in Miami-Dade County at the groundbreaking ceremony for their new museum!
Ms. Kocur and Ms. Christine Todd- Gibson, sponsors of our SECME Club, reported that students had a blast competing, cheering and having FUN at the competitions. NSE/SIB K-8 brought home 2 beautiful trophies to add to our trophy case. Our SECME Teams participated in various competitions and took 2nd place in the Elementary Mousetrap Car race and 3rd place in the Elementary Bottle Rocket launch.
Reading, writing and ‘rithmetic does not tell the whole story at NSE/SIB K-8. We have to add Science to the jingle. We are so very proud of all our students and we are quite certain that we have a future Nobel Prize Winner in our midst. All the students will be displaying their work at our annual Math Science Night on March 27th.
