At the April Sunny Isles Beach City Commission Meeting the Commission presented a proclamation to the Cultural and Community Services Department (CCSD) acknowledging everything the department does to encourage residents and visitors to get outdoors and visit our parks. CCSD provides special events, activities, athletics, recreation and wellness programs year round to encourage a healthy lifestyle and community involvement. A small group represented the department to accept the proclamation on behalf of Cultural and Community Services. The Commission and meeting guests expressed their appreciation for all the department does with a round of applause.
This is the fourth year for “Kids to Parks Day”, organized by the National Park Trust. This day was begun to encourage families to get outdoors and visit America’s parks. Recent changes in lifestyles and decline in park attendance nationwide prompted the trust to encourage local municipalities to promote this yearly event.
America has become a more sedentary society and this change is manifested throughout our population by increases in childhood obesity, diabetes, hypertension and hypercholesterolemia for all ages. By getting outside and becoming active, children and their parents can improve their health and learn to appreciate our natural world.
Kids to Parks Day will be celebrated on Saturday, May 17, 2014 in Sunny Isles Beach with activities at City parks. Check the May 12th issue of this newspaper, Facebook and sibfl.net for details. Look inside this issue for photos of SIB World Class Olympics and Egg Scramble.
