Science is booming at Norman S. Edelcup SIB K-8The NSE/SIB K-8 cafeteria was bursting with students eager to experience hands-on science during the school’s annual Science Bonanza. The room was energized with children and parents who were fascinated by the numerous activities related to science. Music! Exploration! Family Fun! It was all there for students from kindergarten through 8th grade.

Dressed in lab coats, our fifth grade Singing Scientists opened the evening with a bouncy science song that set the tone for the event. Then students had an opportunity to circulate around the room and experience over 30 science based activities. Alonzo and Tracy Mourning High School students taught the children about Physical Science. The Robotics team from MAST Academy & Lego Robotics shared their robotics. The S.W.A.T Team came together with Mark Fagan from the Department of Agriculture on a mission to expose students and parents with information on invasive pests that continue to plague Florida’s agricultural and natural areas.

As students completed an activity, the presenter signed off on their science passport. Once the students had experienced a variety of experiments, they were eligible for a prize. The evening was a wonderful family outing that highlighted science. Many thanks to Ms. Aguilar, Math/Science Coordinator, for organizing the program and raising everyone’s awareness regarding the world of science and a round of applause for the many, many teachers who manned the tables and conducted the experiments. It was truly a community effort.
