Service Over Selfies

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

It is time to take responsibility for what is happening to our youth. Falsely, somehow and at some point, it has become more important to have more “likes” than real people’s phone numbers. The reality is that our kids do not share their numbers anymore… they give each other their “Snapchat” accounts. And the risks of these kind of platforms are abysmal. Maybe some parents are not aware but there are sex predators posting as teens and drug dealers preying on children. Unaware of the risks, children are buying counterfeit pills on Snapchat and unfortunately, by the time parents find out it is usually too late. And that is not the only poisonous platform; Tesla CEO Elon Musk tweeted recently “Is TikTok destroying civilization? Some people think so… Or perhaps social media in general.”

So, it is time for us–the adults–to teach the next generation how good it feels to live in the moment. To enjoy bike riding and beach walks, talking to the old lady that sits alone everyday at the bus station, saying “please” and “thank you”, or playing with their little brothers and sisters. There is REAL JOY in Service over Selfies.

Four rules to stop social media recklessness:

  1. Make sure to answer “yes” to this question before you post anything: Am I proud of what I am going to share?
  2. Do not compare your real-life experiences to someone else’s fake-perfect, well-crafted posts.
  3. Do not buy anything through social media.
  4. Do not share your personal information.

We must stop this humanitarian crisis and save our loved ones.
