The stars aligned on Saturday night, November 15, 2014 to make for a beautiful evening of jazz at the Sunny Isles Beach Jazz Fest. The sky was clear, the stage was set, and the stars; Rochelle Lightfoot, Brenda Alford, LeNard Rutledge and Leon Foster Thomas accompanied by the Melton Mustafa Orchestra, lit up the night. With record attendance and a few new additions, this year was touted as the “best ever”.

New this year, the artwork for the poster was selected through a contest held at the Norman S. Edelcup Sunny Isles Beach K – 8 school. Fortunately, the winner, 3rd grader Brandon Goldberg, is not only a poster artist,he is already an accomplished pianist that has performed at several venues throughout South Florida. He is also scheduled to perform at the upcoming Miami Beach Jazz Festival in January. Sunny Isles Beach Jazz Fest goers were delighted with their sneak preview of his next performance when Brandon took the stage during intermission to play a couple of songs for the audience. The audience was amazed at his performance! Even the professional band members and guest emcee Tracy Fields were surprised at his extraordinary talent at such an early age.

Vice Mayor Aelion (center) and the Steiger family enjoyed a perfect night of music under the stars.

New sponsor, Boston Lager, donated all of the Samuel Adams beer for the event so that 100% of those sales, along with the wine donated by Barefoot Wines, went straight to the event benefactor, Joshua’s Heart Foundation. Joshua himself was present and introduced his team of volunteers at intermission. Joshua has certainly grown along with jazz fest. When we first partnered 5 years ago, Joshua was a young boy. He is now 13 years old and was named a CNN Heroes Young Wonder that will air on CNN on 12/7/14 at 8:00 p.m. for his efforts to ‘stomp out hunger’ globally. Joshua’s goal is to reach 1 million pounds of food donated by the end of 2014. We are proud of our partnership with Joshua and look forward to helping him to reach his goal.

This year we celebrated our long term relationships with some of our sponsors. During intermission, we honored Atlantic Broad Band, Barefoot Wines, Costco, Greater Miami Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, Miami Dade County Tourist Development Council, WDNA, and WLRN with their own custom jazz fest statue. We are grateful for these long term relationships that make Sunny Isles Beach Jazz Fest a classy event worthy of their brand.

Rochelle Lightfoot wowed the crowd with her strong and beautiful voice.

At the end of the night jazz enthusiasts were thirsting for more. And more we gave them as the Sunny Isles Beach Jazz Fest continued on Sunday with a jazz brunch at Trump International Beach Resort. The ‘excellent crowd’ feasted on a buffet while enjoying the delightful sounds of Lourdes Valentin, a local favorite, and her trio. It was the perfect ending to a fabulous weekend of jazz.

We look forward to creating new experiences that will make next year’s SIB Jazz Fest even better.
