Since Pelican Community Park opened in 2008, the facility has become a true cultural center advocating arts, sports and recreation to our residents. A team of dedicated employees from Cultural and Community Services work together to offer a variety of programs for all tastes and ages: Fine Arts, Yoga, Languages, Computers, Poets & Writers Forum, Living Healthy Workshops and Golden Era Movies for adults; Musical Theater, Karate, Gymnastics, Lego Robotics, Basketball, Soccer and Baseball for youth; Egg Scramble, Classic Concert series and various Cultural Trips…and so much more. Here is a small taste of what’s been happening this spring!
On Saturday, March 9th, Sunny Isles Beach Community Center located at Pelican Community Park, once again hosted the annual banquet known as Spring Fling – a cozy and festive evening of dinner and dancing for the residents. More than 120 guests – many of them already regulars – got together at PCP Community Center to enjoy delicious Italian food, to ‘dance and sway’ to beloved tunes of Michael Buble and Bobby Darin, to participate in raffles and to compete in – what turned out to be the best part of the night – the dazzling Twist dance contest with its happy winners and prizes. Spring Fling 2013 also featured a photo gallery of a local master of photography, Ilya Taran, who presented his new photo collection to the guests in an art lounge.
Other March events which acted as forums for our Community Center and showcased the talent (and intelligence) of our youth included: musical showcase ‘Cinderella’, presented by our Musical Theater program on March 13, PCP Chess Club’s Tournament on March 16, and representation of the Sunny Isles Beach PCP Karate team at the prestigious South Florida Karate championship Kata Kumite held at St. Thomas University on March 17. At that event our students scored 6 medals: in both Kata & Kumite, Chloe Araujo won Silver and Zahra Ronizi won Bronze; in Kata, Andre Benavente and Axel Fink both won Bronze. All these events demonstrated that the City of Sunny Isles Beach can be proud of its younger generation of residents.
For our adults, the City is proud to have partnered with a talented artist, well known in art circles and resident of Sunny Isles Beach, Alan Londin, who has been teaching Fine Art for Adults programs for several years at our Community Center. In March, Mr. Londin, whose art has been shown in various galleries including New York, California, and the Design District of Florida, became one of the sponsors of a local charity event – an Art exhibition in Aventura Mall, where he presented his animal sculptures. All three of these sculptures were sold and the proceeds went to the Humane Society .
Another popular adult program in our community is Yoga on the Beach – thanks to our scenic beaches and the enthusiasm of our volunteer Yoga instructor Alvaro Minor. Alvaro is also known as one of the sponsors of the City’s summer camps. Yoga on the Beach, or Sunrise Yoga, is Free and open to general public, but registration is required.
In addition to the many programs and activities offered here by the City, the facilities at Pelican Community Park are also available to rent for private functions. If you are planning a special event – anything from business, to banquets, to a wedding reception, birthday party or any other family occasion, think of our Community Center as your preferred local destination. Conveniently located away from the city’s busiest streets, Pelican Park Community Center seems to greet people with its twostory building, basketball gymnasium, baseball field and a playground with nice shades, perfect for business gatherings and personal celebrations.
