Miami-Dade County Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez announced that his office will not retain a 2% commission on municipalities and the Unincorporated Municipal Service Area of the County (UMSA)— delivering over $40 million in savings to local governments.
“Now more than ever, Miami-Dade County residents deserve a government that is efficient, responsible, and accountable—one that respects every taxpayer dollar, eliminates waste, and focuses on delivering core services that truly make a difference,” said Fernandez. “This is a time for thoughtful leadership, not unnecessary spending or distractions. It’s time to restore trust in government by focusing on results and putting people—not process—at the center of everything we do.”
“From day one, I’ve made it our mission to expand services while doing more with less,” he continued. “By stepping back from this commission, we’re keeping nearly $40 million available for our local governments to reinvest directly into their communities. It’s now up to them to seize this opportunity—and give taxpayers the relief they deserve. As a Tax Collector, I’m focused on driving innovation, modernizing a broken DMV system, and delivering a better experience for residents. I’ll continue working alongside our cities and the County to help deliver greater savings and efficiency for the people we serve.”
In just the first 100 days since taking office on January 7, Fernandez has delivered results. Under his leadership, the Tax Collector’s Office has expanded services countywide, taken control of two formerly state-run DMV offices, and launched a new full-service location in Downtown Miami-proving that government can move fast, work smarter, and better serve the people.
Building on that momentum, the office has implemented new technology streamlines operations and strengthened accountability across the board. Strategic hiring, training and operational improvements have significantly reduced wait times at key locations, including the Central Office in N.W. 37th Ave. Self-service kiosk installed in supermarkets across the county now allow residents to conveniently renew vehicle registrations. Fernandez also took a decisive action against appointment scalpers who, for years, profited from reselling DMV appointments, restoring fairness and access to essential public services.
“We’ve eliminated more than $2.5 million in unnecessary contracts and reinvested those savings into better technology, improved service delivery, and restoring dignity in how residents interact with government,” added Fernandez.
