On a sunny Sunday morning of October 17th 2010, Mayor Norman Edelcup and the City Commission hosted a beachfront ground breaking ceremony for the Sunny Isles Beach Newport Fishing Pier. Attendees got a first hand look at renderings for Newport Fishing Pier which was badly damaged during Hurricane Wilma in 2005.
The City has entered into a public-private partnership with the owner of the Newport Beachside Hotel and Resort to restore the Newport Fishing Pier – the last remaining public pier in Miami-Dade County.
In 1936, the Sunny Isles Fishing Pier was built and quickly became a popular destination for tourists and fisherman. The half-mile pier was designated as a historic site in 1982 and is still popular with fishing enthusiasts and sightseers from around the world. Millions of tourists have visited or fished from this pier since it was built in 1936. The project is set to be completed by late August 2011. This completed project will re-establish the pier as one of the city’s major landmarks.
Attendees enjoyed a delicious breakfast sponsored by the Shoreline Foundation who was selected as the project’s general contractor. The designer of record is BHA and Calvin Giordano and Associates is providing project management services.
