Dr. Snyder, Jeff Berson and Dr. Weissman

I am so proud of the students and staff and all that they have accomplished in this first quarter of the school year. We have reactivated our K-Kids and Builders clubs with the help and support of the Kiwanis. Dr. Snyder, 3rd grade teachers, sponsors the K-Kids with support from other teachers and parents. The organization provides students in grades 2-5 with an opportunity to learn about service to the community. So far the group has participated in Project Eliminate which raises money for the distribution of tetanus shots and other medications which are distributed around the world by the Kiwanis organization. After a 3- week campaign, the K-Kids, along with Dr. Annette Weissman and Dr. Caryn Snyder presented Jeff Berson of Kiwanis with a check for $2,000. The group’s next project is collecting small toiletries which will be packaged and mailed to our armed forces in Afghanistan.

With the assistance of Ms. Panerali, we also launched our Writers’ Café Showcase which celebrates writing across the curriculum for students in grades K-5. Honored students received certificates for their special writing pieces and then one student from each grade level read their story or poem to the audience. Thanks to the support of our PTSA, the students also enjoyed some light refreshments. It was a delightful event that reinforced our figurative language and writing programs. Next quarter we will celebrate another group of writers who will be writing in mathematics.

It was only October, but our middle school students and their parents were thinking about next year and exploring their options for high school. Ms. DeSantana, Middle School Counselor, arranged a Magnet Fair which was held in Pelican Park Community Center. Representatives from several school in Miami-Dade distributed information and answered questions about their curriculum and after school activities for our parents and students.

Dr. Todd-Gibson, chairperson of our Dream in Green initiative, pairs and middle school grade with an elementary grade each month to spearhead an environmental project. Last month every student signed a pledge to better the environment before they left the cafeteria. From kindergarten through eighth grade students learn about various conservation measures and how they can make a difference in the world.
